How did you become a fan of a team?

Being a Reds fan seems to have been passed down through generations. My grandfather grew up around the Cincinnati area in Kentucky. My father grew up in southeastern Indiana where the nearest team was the Reds. I grew up in Illinois, but the Big Red Machine was winning at the time that I started following baseball, so I picked them.

I became a Celtics fan during the 80s when Larry Legend played. Never followed NBA basketball until then.

Been a Bears fan since I was a kid.

I was a Dale Earnhardt fan since the mid-80s when everybody hated him. When Earnhardt wrecked Darrell Waltrip in the '86 Richmond race, my father instantly didn't like Earnhardt because he liked DW. I decided I was going to root for Earnhardt from then on, even though he had been blatantly dirty in that particular race.

 

Growing up in NW Indiana around Chicago I became a fan of all the Chicago teams except the White Sox.

I became a fan of Indiana Univ because I loved basketball and well every kid that loves basketball in that state loves IU it seems.

As a kid I liked Darrell Waltrip because he drove the Mountain Dew car for awhile and I thought it was cool. I am now a fan of Dale Jr because he and I lost our fathers about the same age and I have a big place in my heart for him. I am also a fan of Tony Stewart because he is an Indiana guy and I like the way he drives (most of the time.)

 

Grew up in D.C., so I've always been a Redskins fan

Met Steinbrenner at a funeral and became a Yankees fan.

FSU at first because our daughter went there, now a Gator's fan because I'm a front runner. :laugh: But I'm also a Cubs fan so that evens out the front runner stuff.

 

Dad was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan. I grew up in NW Ohio, so we were fairly close to the Detroit area. It became natural for me to become a Detroit and Michigan fan. Baseball is my favorite, so the Tigers have always been my favorite.

 

My father's progression of racers was Fireball, then Cale, then DW.

Simple answer...

Became a Tigers fan because I grew up in the Detroit area
Became a Piston's fan because ditto
Became a Red Wings fan because of ditto
Became a Lions fan... well we won't go there!:BangHead:

Became a Michigan fan because of the family in which I grew up.
Became a UNC basketball fan because of living in NC for a a few years.

Since I now live overseas and now enjoy soccer I became a Boca Juniors fan because I like their players and style of play plus their colors are the same as Michigan.

Became a Browns, Cavs and Indians fan due to geography.

Became an OSU fan due to the fact they actually won, and us Clevelanders are starved for winning ANYTHING...well, this was the case at least until this year. I'm rethinking my loyalty to OSU. If I want to watch a football and basketball team finish second or lower, I have the Cavs and Browns.

As a kid I became an NC State basketball fan when they knocked off UCLA in '74 and won the national championship. I was a freshman in college when Valvano's '83 team won the championship. It's been a long dry spell since then. It was sure fun to hear that the team beat UNC this year with Sidney Lowe as the coach. I haven't lived in N.C. for many years so I don't keep up with the ACC as I used to. I always enjoy any ACC team doing well in the NCAA tournament.

I have lived in or near Philly since '95. Slowly, I have developed interest in the local pro sports teams. Eagles: I really think Andy Reid is a great guy and a good coach. As long as he is in Philly, the Eagles will be contenders. Sixers: I enjoyed the team when Brown was here coaching because of his roots in N.C. Now that they have unloaded Iverson, I think they can build something. Flyers: No hocky for me, thank you very much! Phillies: I like Charlie Manual. The team looks good on paper this year. I'll try to go see them a time or two this summer.

In 1975, my grandfather gave me a transistor radio. I was sitting on my aunt's front porch thumbing the dial when I came accross a NASCAR race from Talledega, AL. Buddy Baker pulled a sling-shot on Richard Petty coming out of the last turn and won. I was hooked on NASCAR. I'm still a Petty fan too!

 

Well the only one that really matters to me is UK football and basketball. Mainly because my husband played football there, and we both graduated from there.

As for NBA I like the Pistons and/or the Magic. The Pistons because I like Tashaun Prince, (former UK player ), and the Magic because of geographic location.

Hubby is a HUGE Steelers fan. He grew up near Pittsburgh and had family members play for them. He also watches the Patriots because his cousin plays for them.

 

I was born in and lived a time in Cincinnati, though my family hails from the Knoxville, TN area. My dad was one of many who had to go north to find good work, or to find work that wouldn't leave you with black lung Therefore, I became and am still to this day a Reds fan. Besides, East TN was (and still in large part is) Reds country. However, Harry Carry and WGN turned me onto the Cubs. If not for my beloved Reds, I'd be a Cubbie. But the Reds are probably second only to the Vols.

I was a Bengals fan until the Titans came to Nashville, though my allegiance is still somewhat divided between the two.

I'm obviously a Tennessee Vols/Lady Vols fan in any sport (7 Women's b-ball titles!)

I root hard for the Predators in hockey, and have since they became an expansion team (So close to winning the President's Trophy this year, now can't even win the Central...oh well...the Cup's coming to Music City!)

I lived in Louisville, KY for several years, so I follow the Cards, and having spent my whole life on or near the KY border or IN the state, I keep up with what goes on with UK. Having lived near both campuses, I keep up with Xavier and Cincinnati, and to a lesser extent, Miami (OH). I used to also root for Ohio State when they weren't playing UT, but I'm getting weaned from that. I will always hate Michigan though, given my Ohio "roots" and Charles Woodson.

My time in Louisville turned me onto the Indiana Pacers, though as a child I rooted for the Cavs briefly (being born in Ohio) and for the Atlanta Hawks (I liked Dominique Wilkins). Right now, I really don't root for anyone in the NBA. Memphis is 8 hours away, so the Pacers, Cavs, Bobcats, and Hawks are closer than the Grizz.

I guess my allegiance is: Vols (any sport), Reds, Predators, Titans/Bengals, then Xavier/Cincy/Louisville.

I'm a big golfer and golf fan, and have been since Jack's win in the 1980 U.S. Open. I used to follow tennis, but really don't care now that McEnroe, Edberg, Lendl, Connors, et.al. are gone. I know what's going on in NASCAR, though rarely watch a lap. I used to like INDY racing (they need to reunite with CART) and used to even watch a little F-1.

I'm a soccer fan once every World Cup. I also like the Winter Olympics then the Summer Games.

I grew up in Arkansas, so I root for the Razorbacks.

 

I was born KY blue and was raised there until I left home at 18 to join the AF. I will always be UK blue wherever I end up until the day I die.

Now my other teams are kind of strange but when you travel to so many places you kind of start liking the teams there as well. When I was stationed in Charleston, SC I really started to like South Carolina in college sports.

When I was in North Carolina, I took a liking to the Carolina Panthers, but I could never ever support or like the Tar Heels.

When I was stationed in way upstate NY close to the Canadian border my 2nd favorite baseball team was the Montreal Expos. They were a very good team back then and would have won the world series the year of the strike. Then of course they ended up declining big time and losing their team.

When I was in Hawaii, I went to every kind of Hawaii sports function and the baseball, football, basketball, and even volleyball teams had great support and my son and I were always there cheering for them.

Now stationed in San Antonio, I am a huge Spurs fan and even have season tickets. I always liked them but now they are my team.

The Cubs in baseball just because it was one of the first cable channels we got that showed baseball (I never could stand the Braves or WTBS) and I loved listening to Harry Carry and the other annonuncers there)

I started loving the Denver Broncos when I was a kid watching Craig Morton when he led his team to the SB against Dallas. I have stayed loyal ever since and still love my Broncos.

I could go on and on like when I was stationed overseas but the bottom line is my overall top 5 are:

1. Kentucky sports (basketball obviously #1)
2. Denver Broncos
3. San Antonio Spurs
4. Chicago Cubs
5. Hawaii sports

 

What...surfing?

 

Its definitely in how well the team plays...duh :smilewinkgrin:
