How do these verses on propitiation compare?

The greek pagan concept of "propitiation" is sometimes thought of as the correct translation of Hilasmos (as we see with many translators even today). In this greek pagan concept "Christ SO SACRIFICED that an angry God became at PEACE with those for whom propitiation was made"

But the more Biblically accurate concept of "ATONMENT" is the model for Christ's death since in that model "GOD SO LOVED that HE GAVE..." and so as the NIV translators have shown "He is the ATONING SACRIFICE for our sins and NOT for OUR SINS only but for those of the WHOLE WORLD" 1John 2:2

And so again in Rom 3:25 the same concept of "atoning sacrifice" where "God so LOVES that HE GIVES that atoning sacrifice" or as Rom 3 points out "in the FORBEARANCE OF GOD" we find forgiveness of sins past.

What's your definition of atonement?

 

God provides His own definition in Lev 16. It
BEGINS with the Atoning Sacrifice of 16:9,15 "The SIN offering" the goat that is called the "Lord's Goat" is called the "sin offering" once selected and slain. (Christ's death on the cross). This is the part where we see "our ceriticate of debt nailed to the cross" Col 2:15 NASB

It then "proceeds" with the work of the High priest IN the sanctuary done FOR the people.

The Atonement process INCLUDEs the resolution of sins for the entire year and the work of taking guilt out of the sanctuary and placing it on the head of the scapegoat (vs 21) when work in the Sanctuary is complete. (The scapegoat is not a sin offering - and therefore not a substitutionary offering - so there is no NT reference to Christ taking on that role).

This final disposition of sin (the Jews called it a day of judgment for the world) is the ultimate meaning in Lev 16 of "Atonement".
