I just finished preparing a Sunday school lesson on John 13. One interesting thing I read was by William Barclay.

"Jesus loved His disciples sacrificially. There was no limit to what His love would give or to where it would go. No demand that could be made upon it was too much. If love meant the Cross, Jesus was prepared to go there. Sometimes we make the mistake of thinking that love is meant to give us happiness. So in the end it does, but love may well bring pain and demand a cross."

Have you ever had love for someone (friends, wife/husband, family member, etc.) that brought pain? I can think of a few examples. care to share?

Yes. But share? It's hard to remember pain without feeling something of it again.

Being thought of as the religious freak by the family (non-Christian) I grew up in and whom I love.

Doing and doing and doing, as all mothers do, for my children, and having some turn viciously on you as young adults. And still loving them, and still waiting for reality to smack them upside the head!

Being massively betrayed and abandon by a highschool sweetheart who was my husband for twenty years.

Accepting so many failing students as private school students on a gratis basis because their families were so poor, and then after they successfully transitioned back into high school, never hearing from them again.

the older I get, the more I understand the meaning of "love hurts." Love means caring for someone over and above any pain to yourself, though. Shakespeare's words are often in my mind:
"Love is not love when it alteration finds,
Or bends with the remover to remove.
Oh no, it is an ever fix'ed mark..."

But I know this, if God's love were not in me, there is no chance I could have loved past that much pain at times!

"Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things."

The example I could share is about how unloving, self-centered and egotistical I was. How God brought terminal illness to my wife and pulled all the slats out from under my life. How God healed her and changed my understanding of love.

Real love is sacrificial. "God loved the world, so that He gave His Son . . "
