gwyneth you say you often get confused, well thats no so bad I am confused all the time.people through out time have always felt good when they can put a label on themselves. It gives people a sense of belonging. If you tell a bloke that there is no place for him in this world,he might get a bit mad,and then i have told people that there is a place for them and they did not like that either. so you just cannot win its no wonder I am confused.

We have 40+ MAJOR national groups of Baptists in the USA. What basic divisions (and CAUSE for said division) are there in the UK or down under?

Even within a US group (say, Southern Baptist) there are massive pendulum shifts from the most liberal to the most conservative. Hard to pigeon-hole any.

That's why I claim some adjectives before "baptist". I am independent, historic fundamentalist baptist.

    And you are?

    Gwyneth,

why do you consider yourself a Baptist? What church do you go to?
I attend a Baptist Church but I do not consider myself Baptist. I am one of those people that do not like to put labels on Bible believing Christians. I just consider myself a God fearing Christian. :D

I have served in the British Baptist Union, the Martimes Baptist Convention, the Association of Reguar Baptist Churches, the Felowship of Evangelical Baptist Churches.......What kind of Baptist am I? In plain English; a Bible-believing kind of Baptist. Is there another?

    Cheers,

    Jim

It`s just that when I read the posts, that so many people claim to be this, that or the other kind of Baptist. What sort of differences can there be amongst Christians that would divide them so much? There seem to be big differences because I notice big disagreements. Once in a Church I was attending some years ago there were some rumblings of discord in the congregation and the pastor quoted this verse to us,Galatians ch 5 verse 15 he said that we should not be seen as a congregation who didn`t have a singular set of beliefs. This was an Independant Trinitarian Evangelical Church they believe in full immersion baptism, the teaching there was exceptionally strong, as was the pastors` hand on his flock.I now attend a country Church which is Presbyterian, because this is my husbands preference .I was baptised in Zion Baptist Church by full immersion whilst attending the aforementioned Evangelical Church, most of the people there were baptised in the river..... but it was the wrong time of year too cold for me, so we went to Zion.So.... what kind of a baptist would you say that I am?

The most important kind. Twice born, baptized, believing and living in the lord. What more can anyone ask?

Cheers, and blessings on you and yours.

    Jim

PS. I don't understand all the divisions either. In Canada, the early division had to do with modernism which captured the seminary. The second split had more to do with personalities. I just wonder how many in the USA are also over personalities more than doctrine.

I agree with Jim1999. The most important thing is to be a Christian and living for the Lord.

From reading the posts on this board, it seems that there are more personal beliefs expressed than doctrines of the Baptist Church. But with 40+ different kinds of Baptist....maybe they are the beliefs of their church.

As in any group of people, there are extremes. People who are very conservative and those that are liberal and then those that are in between.

It is important that a person study the Bible and listen to God and decide for himself. We must put our faith in God.

I am a Southern Baptist because the Southern Baptist beliefs are the closest to what I believe than any other church or religion. But....I believe some things that some Southern Baptist do not believe.

You can learn from all the wonderful posts here and discussions in your church, but when in doubt, always go to the Bible for the Answer.

Good questions. I consider myself an Independant Fundamental Baptist because I am a member of that type of church.

But, sometimes I wish I went to a church that wasn't as strict... It gets to be opressive...all the responsibility and rules.

I wasn't always Baptist. And if I were to move out of the area, I don't know if I would go out of my way to join another I.F.B. It's so strict, so black and white, so conservative.... I just feel like no matter how much I try, it doesn't ever feel like I'm doing enough, or have the right attitude of willingness to eat, sleep and breath church...like it seems others have no trouble doing.

I use the Bible as my guide... of that I will not deter...but being Baptist... the type that I am? I would like to quit entirely from the all or nothing type of denomination that I am a part of. To be honest.

  12. There are a bunch of different kinds of Baptist ,and you have to be careful because they believe all kinds of things. I think it is important to distinguish your self as a Baptist so people will understand your are not like the Catholics or the Protestants. I think it is important to further distinguish yourself so one would know what you believe. I am a Southern Fundamental Baptist. I am a KJB only Baptist I believe in the blood the Book and the blessed hope. But I guess the best way to describe myself is just a sinner saved by grace.

It really doesn't matter what label we go by, or what others call us. The name of the denomination isn't going to get us into heaven. A former preacher at the SBC church I attended as a child and young adult frequently said that there will be a lot of Baptists who "bust hell wide open." Many who are on church rolls around the world assume that they are going to heaven, but that isn't always the case. No matter what church roll our name is in, the only important thing is whether our name is written in the Lamb's Book of Life. That is the roll for the true church. All other rolls are of man's creation and really mean nothing in the scope of eternity.
