What EXACTLY did Jesus and other men of his time wear? Someone said to me today "Jesus wore a dress" NO WAY! I know he didn't wear a dress! What exactly was it, if anyone knows, and is it in the scripture? Please don't say he wore a robe (LoL)

P.S. Maybe I should tell you the context of the conversation...it was about men not wearing that which pertaineth a woman and a woman not wearing that which pertaineth a man..you know the scripture in Deut. The conversation was a person asking why I always wear dresses now and I don't wear shorts and pants anymore...maybe this will help someone answer the "Jesus wore a dress" statement. Thanks!

He wore breeches, which were knee length pants of a sort which covered him from the waist down to the knees, leggings, which covered the leg from the ankle to the knee and were held in place by the latchet of his sandles, a coat much like today's shirt, and held in place, as were the breeches, by a girdle or large belt or shash, and over all of that a cloke, rather like todays overcoat, but often without sleeves in hot weather, and very large, wide sleeves in colder weather.

A little off topic, but maybe not, what about Jesus' hair?

Does not the very nature of things teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a disgrace to him, but that if a woman has long hair, it is her glory? For long hair is given to her as a covering. (1 Cor 11:15 NIV)

This tells me that most of the artist's renditions we have of Jesus are wrong. I doubt, Paul having "seen" Jesus on the road to Damascus, would have made this statement if Jesus had been a "long hair." I believe that Jesus had a nicely trimmed, "Thomas Cassidy Special" (saw your picture: sharp looking!) type haircut. :D

Kathy,

In our culture, shorts and pants cut for women are clothes that "pertaineth to a woman."

Thomas, what are you using as a resource to indicate that Jesus wore breeches. It was my understanding that breeches weren't introduced into Roman culture until they encountered the Germanic tribes which conquered them. I've never seen any archaelogical evidence that breeches were in use in the temperate climates around the Mediterranean.

Heehee. Were you being sarcastic then with the breeches comment, because I do not see any NT reference to Jesus wearing breeches.

Don't make me go postal on you! LoL

Anyway...I don't think Doc Cassidy is being sarcastic in what Jesus wore and I agree with Brother Wells in saying that all these pictures and artists renditions of what Jesus looked like are garbage! Jesus was PERFECT, He did have long hair and He was not all frail and skinny! The man was a carpenter AND in the days where there were no power tools!

Thanks Doc Cassidy, I knew that wasn't true...it's just someone trying to be antagonistic with me I'm sure! *Sigh*

Hi CJoshuaV, I'm not trying to be antagonistic to you, but by saying this about "culture" I think that it kinda blows the whole Bible out of the water...like why should we bother with it, it was written for another time period and culture. What do you think?

Kathy,

The question here is, what is the focus of the passage you are citing. Is it attacking the general principle of cross-dressing, or is it specifically saying that from that point forward, the clothes that are in use for men should be their clothes for all time, and likewise women?

I was not aware that Jesus wore britches either. I would like to find that Bible verses to verify that. I do not know my history all that well, but I have not heard of any historical account saying that those are what they wore in that time period. What about David, did he also wear britches back in his day?

If the cultural thing is irrelevant then I guess all Scottish men are in violation because of thier kilts. I believe all clothing is cultural and changes over time. Even the Amish who still dress the way they do are dressing according to the cultural style of one specific era, not according to any specific demands placed on us in the Bible.

Just my thoughts, feel free to challenge them. After all, I could be way off base. It is awfully late and my mind isn't quite awake yet. I am only up cause this lil one won't let me sleep. :D

Since none of us were alive when Jesus walked on earth we don't know what Jesus's hair looked like but I can say this....the bible says long hair on a man is a shame, not a sin, and what is considered long? It doesn't say what is long...just a thought.

Kathy,

The issue of dress is one of the classic examples of how fundamentalism works.

The process goes something like this:

- Women today wear pants

- Most women in the 19th Century didn't wear pants

- Anything that's changed since the 19th Century is probably bad, but the way things were done in the 19th Century must be the way things were always done

- Find a verse about men and women not wearing each other's clothes (in this case Deut 22:5)

- Ignore the fact that a few verses later we are told that all roofs should have parapets and a few verses later that we are told we should not wear clothing of blended fabrics; but emphasize that one verse as God's "clear command" (God has apparently changed God's mind about that other stuff)

- Hope that people will take that verse to mean pants versus dresses, even though there was no such distinction at the time.

- When people point out that the only real distinction between male and female dress in early Israel would have been the bright colors and type of fabric (and that some men wore underwear) try to make it sound like the underwear was actually pants.

- The whole purpose of the argument is to force the Bible to conform to a specific worldview (women wearing pants is wrong) even though this is not what the Bible says at all and any man who wears a wool blend suit is in clear violation of the verse 6 verses following.

Joshua
(Who, even when he was the pastor of a relatively conservative baptist church never ran into anyone concerned about the women who wore pants in worship.)

>>the bible says long hair on a man is a shame,>>

True , but what about the Nazirite vow such as Samson took. No hair cuts allowed!

We do know that Jesus wore a seamless robe.
Perhaps He had also taken a Nazirite vow.
Oops , no, He drank wine, so I guess not [IMG]

Hank, you wouldn't believe the lengths our associate pastor used to go to in an attempt to convince us that the wine of the New Testament had no alcohol in it ;) .

Sir Thomas; would you be so kind as to provide scripture for your answer of breeches, I found a reference in my Torrey notes about priests wearing "trousers" but even he gave no scripture for support.
