I was just wondering how many people who read and post here are disabled. I think myself and npet have degenerative disc disease as a common "thorn in the side". I've had two back surgeries and face more if God allows me to live that long. I have chronic pain as a result of this disability. I'm a student at a local Baptist college and have pastored a small church in our area. I hope to plant a new church in the near future. I know that I've gained a lot of knowledge here in this forum, and I'm pretty sure that a lot of disabled people use the net as a way to "get out" and learn. Grace and peace

Well, despite a few problems, the Lord has ENabled me...LOL

chondromalasia, left knee, has ended up in two total knee replacements there, this one is now 26 years old and going strong!

osteoarthritis, many joints, primarily hands and feet (I now wear my wedding ring on a chain around my neck )

just had carpal tunnel surgery on my right hand. It was evidently bad enough inside to require an inch and a half incision rather than a couple of little holes. Still healing (it was less than three weeks ago).

diabetic, type II, but very grateful for it waiting until last year. I was kicked by a horse in the gut when I was 21 and lost my spleen and half my pancreas. I am now 58.

that's the major stuff. Minor junk comes with age and is popping up with undue regularity now.

TNTC, lab lingo for 'too numerous to count'! I fear you might be very bored with it all!
Old bodies, old dogs, old cars take maximum maintenance!

Seems I have lived this past year crisis to crisis but everyday when I awaken I give thanks to Him to does all things well!

I am disabled. I have a very bad back, I can't walk far, or stand up long, it is so stiff and hurts a lot in the mornings, yesterday making breakfast I could hardly stand, I had to sit several times.
And thats the end of that.

Well I know about the getting old part. I'm almost 50! But I feel younger. I can actually thank the Lord for my pain. It was my pain that brought me to the bottom of myself, and no where to turn but the Lord. I know that He uses different calamities to bring us to where we have no where to turn but Him. Some of us it is physical, some mental anguish. Some both. :) I was ready to die and prayed for HIm to take my life. Instead He changed my innermost being. He changed my nature. He made me want His Word more than anything else in life. That put my pain (which used to be the center of my focus) on the outside. Christ is my center now. Praise God!

Well, you are not so 'old'! I had three children before the year of your arrival in the world! Three more came later.
I agree that God uses different means to bring us to grace and faith in Him. The suicide of my first child brought me to my knees and brought up many questions. How could this happen to me? I always had tried so hard to do the 'right' thing, now this? Why me? We are a 'nice' family!(hear this pharisee talking?) Telling all the other siblings was great trauma in itself! The lasting damage lingers with us all but God has been merciful!
Being widowed also is a great means of seeing our whole need is Christ! I'm never lonely or bored but I am certainly lonesome often, missing the companionship of sharing!
Health issues have never been life threatening but at times it felt as though they were!
All in all it is only when He is our all in all that we have joy in our heart, see Him for Who He is, anticipate our meeting with Him and yearn to learn, grow in grace and gratitude for His mercy and grace! All lives are challenged in some ways. My only wish would have been to come to faith early on but His ways are perfect!

    2BHizown;
So sorry about your child. None of us know how we would handle that until it happen to us. You are some older than I am but I am not young.

I've been disabled by Severe Depression for over two years now.
Actually, being on BB and participating in the various forums is therapy for me.
My Therapist told me that being around happy, positive, people was the best therapy for me, and he was sure right.

I am considered to be disabled as well, although to look at me casually, you would probably not notice anything.

I am completely blind in one eye and am quite nearsighted in the other, enough so that I have never been able to drive. I was born three months premature (weighed 2 pounds 4 ounces, which was not much in 1957) and only given a one out of ten chance of living.

I have read that three out of every four babies born such as I ended up being completely blind, so I had to beat those odds as well.

I've always believed that The Lord wanted me to be here and had His purposes for my life, so I am very thankful to HIm for the life I have and the sight I do have. I am so aware that every day I live and can enjoy the view of the world around me, that it all comes from God's inexhaustable grace.

My parents were in their mid/late 30's when I was born and had lots of common sense, so they treated me not much differently than my siblings. I did have to sit up near the front of the class in school to see the board well. I was also not good in sports, not having much depth perception with one eye.

Even with glasses, I only have about 20/60 or 20/80 sight in my good eye. I remember a discussion on this board several years ago where people were mentioning their nearsightedness and one lady posted that her glasses prescription was a minus 9, and that she was Mrs. Magoo, or something like that.

I had to chuckle to myself just a bit when I read that, as my glasses are a minus 17 right now! She probably thought she took home the prize in that regard, but I would be glad to settle for a minus 9!

Of course, it's more difficult to get around not being able to drive, but The Lord has made a path for me and I can see His Fingerprints in my circumstances.

Thank you for the replies. I never feel sorry for myself, but thank God that I can always see how it could be worse. God's providence is so evident in my life. I can see His footprints all along the path. While we are in the storms of life, it is hard to see how He is protecting us by putting us in the storm, but down the path it becomes too evident for those who have eyes to see. I can only thank Him for the storms... and His providence. What an awesome God!

After crushing my foot on 7/11/05 (never forget that day..."lucky" day :) ), I missed an entire year of work. My foot still continues to swell, and may be permanent lymphedema, so you can say I'm at least temporarily partially disabled.

I also have a bum knee from two surgeries related to football, but who doesn't have bad knees that played football?

I have yet to meet someone severly disabled that did not thank God for their good fortune . . . isn't it ironic that so many able bodied indviduals do not thank God for their good fortune . . .

    Re:disabled

I was shot twice in Vietnam, have had skin grafts done on the back of my left leg, and lost my left middle finger (part of it at least) in an accident. Yet I have found nothing physical matches the heartbreak of losing fellowship with Christ. How I have empathized on occasion with David when he cried "restore unto me the joy of thy salvation' Ps 51:12

I was diagnosed with grand mal epilepsy when I was 15 years old. The doctors think I could have developed it from an injury to the brain from a bad car wreck when I was 4 or having encephalitis when I was 5.

Either way, it doesn't matter. I have had only 5 bad seizures in my entire life and when I get tired, my speech can stutter just a tiny bit.

But, thank God for medications. I live a 99% normal life with them and really only have problems when I don't take them properly. God has blessed me beyond measure with a valuable career and a fulfilling purpose in my life.

By reading all of these posts and guessing that there are MANY more people on the BB who could add to ours, let's resolve to say that the devil would like us to suffer and feel "afflicted", but we know that God loves us, even in the worst moments of our lives and desires good for us and wants us to be content and fulfilled in Him.

And when we know that and do that, then the pains of life don't seem so important.....they're still there, but they don't shape our living nor our cause for Christ.

Major heart attack in 1972 lost half of the heart then. I had 5 bypass heart surgery in 1982 which lasted until 1998 then I had

3 bypass heart surgery. 2000 I had Carotid arterey surgery on left side of neck and in 2002 I had Carotid surgery on the right

side of neck. I also had a double hyneria surgery with mesh put in my stomach in 1999.

I try to live my life as if nothing is wrong with me at all and thank God every day for what I have left. The last heart surgery I

had 32 lbs of fluid build up on me and family could not even tell it was me. I was in so much misery I could see peace but

could not reach it. I ask God to let me die so I could enter the peace but it was not His will for me to go yet. I preach every

Sunday and most Saturdays and take care of a lot of funerals. I go to Gymn 3 times a week to keep the body as good as I can

and try to diet. I will praise my Lord until I take my last breath. Hope I didn't rattle on too much. I know there are those on

here in worse shape than I am. God Bless all, :praying:

I should add that with all of our sickness our companions suffer even more than we do with all the hours of taking care of us.

Mine has laid on the hospital floor as many as 42 days at a time. She truly has been my angel through all of this.

Amen Bro. Bob. I can't imagine having to see my wife go through what I've been through. That would hurt too much. I know that Jesus feels our pain just as we feel our spouse's pain. His love is beyond measure.

I am currently collecting SSD. I have been disabled most of my life, but have been able to work some. I haven't worked in over a year. It's my hope to get back into the working field soon. I start a new medication today and it's my hope by October to be able to get back to work. I currently have spondylolisthesis and have two titanium rods in my back. I have constant pain. I also have osteoarthritis and major clinical depression.
