How many here who are NOT kjvo...

All of my memorisation is from the KJV. That is ome reason I preach out of it. I find myself stumbling when I try to preach out of another version.

 

I use the NASB 99% of the time.

I think it's easier to memorize KJV scripture simply because it sounds different today. The 'eths, thees, thous, etc... tend to stand out. It’s basically sounds a bit odd sometimes and I think that makes it easy to remember.

I generally have a balance of both the KJV and NASB when I quote scripture. Since I study and read from the NASB it seems to be more familiar to me now. Nothing wrong with using older bibles like the KJV etc...

I use the NASB when I quote John 3:16, John 1:1-4, and Jude 1:25 for example. I use the KJV when I quote Romans 3:23, Romans 6:23, and Romans 10:9-10. I tend to have a nice mix at times

I believe many people memorize Scripture from the KJV because it's not in our everyday language & therefore stands out better in our memories.

 

Well actual studies show the KJV is easier to memorize. And when the Holy Ghost is drawing His Word out of you, of course he will use the version He has stood behind for 400 years, the one that He brought into being.

 

Interesting, can you document those studies for us please?

 

The Holy Ghost will use whatever words HE knows are appropriate for the situation, be it in modern English, older English, or Slobbovian.

All of my memorization has been KJV. Unless otherwise noted, all my citations in discussions are KJV.

I agree with Robycop3. The difference in language makes it stand-out in the brain. Any time we memorize or even remember something, it has to be "associated" with something else. This is the reason people who can remember names of everybody they meet work hard at putting the name with something about the person to force them to remember it.

I think the difference in language does stand out in the brain and it just makes it easier to remember. This might be one very good use for the KJV if we find this to be true with some testing. It would be interesting to have groups of kids seperated and memorize two different versions and run the scores just to see.

Part of the reason the KJV is easier for SOME of us is that we grew up listening and memorizing it a young kids. When you do that, it is imbedded in your mind. This is why it is so important to have kids in church early, regardless of what translation the church uses.

We grew up on/around the KJV, and it is what we learned.

It is important to have our kids in church as early as possible. Every child has a vaccuum that will be filled with something...we need to try to keep them exposed to what SHOULD go there.

I think it is probably easier to memorize passages from the KJV because, whether or not we are KJVO, the KJV is the version that we have heard and read since we were kids, and it just seems more familiar to us. Some of today's newer versions just lack the poetic feel of the KJV, even though there may be nothing wrong with those versions.

 

Usually, yes. But I think that's simply because it's more "common" - i.e. we hear it more often, it's more familiar for many. I don't think the KJV is technically any easier to memorize - I once memorized the entire book of James, word for word, from the NIV - so no one is going to convince me that modern versions are harder to memorize.

 

I was raised in the church with the KJV and did alot of memorization. Since the NKJV came out I have been using it and now I memorize the Scripture from it.

For the most part... I just like the way it sounds better and most people in America will recognize you are quoting scripture. It is almost like being able to put quotation marks around the text.

Nothing spiritual or academic about it- just a preference.
