How much do you pay?

How much do you pay per month for the service that puts you on the WWW? Sadly, we pay $15.95 for the lightning speed connection of 40000 bps...yes, that's right, we have a 56kmodem. Every once in a great while we gather enough courage to ask Directv, Adelphia cable, AOL, and the phone company what services are available in our area to date.

We are finally starting to get answers, but so far the only viable option is DWAY (from Directv) which wants...........$99.99 per month.

OUCH.

I don't believe that price includes hardware, either.

SO, how much do you pay each month,
what kind of connection do you have,
and what hardware is necessary and what is the cost incurred?

I don't know a thing about 'puter-talk, but there's a box that has 56K on it that came with the part that just got replaced when lightening hit it. Our monthly bill to bayou.com is $19.95 & when I point to the little 'puters at the bottom it says 21600 bps. (hope I didn't wake Forrest up with my ramblings)

p.s. plus my phone bill to BellSouth, which usually averages $20/mo.

I have a cable connection. Lightnin' fast. The cost? Including my cable TV? around 85.00 month. But if you added the separate phone line I had with my 56k plus my ISP it camt to about the same.with the frustration of a dial-up.

I pay about 10.00 a month for regular dial up, though i have a 56k Im usually connected at 50 or so.
Living in the mountains, in the middle of what seems like nowhere (im from NJ) It took some adjusting, but its really not bad.
I dont recommend satellite and cable isnt available here yet

We don't have a $50 option around here...It's at least $99/month and a year's commitment, so it's around 1200.00/year, and that sounds steep.

Linda, why don't you recommend satellite hook up?

I have forgotten what the prices on cable are around here, but I DO know that it isn't available here yet. BTW, Adelphia cable is all there is around here...aren't they in some kind of trouble???

Our DSL is $49.95 a month; the modem was provided at no cost as part of the start-up promotion. (The monthly cost was $39.95 for the first year.)

That's a tad pricey, but I was able to drop my second phone line when I got DSL because we can use the same line for voice and data at the same time.

In addition, I have a Linksys router (about $75) that connects all three computers to the Internet so we can use one (very fast) connection.

Sometimes I grumble, but it only takes one trip to the Web on a dial-up connection to make me remember why I switched.

I've been talking to an isp that plans to have wireless in my neighborhood sometime in the next 6 or so months. It works off radio frequencies, & is supposed to be lightening fast, and no "drop-offs"!

The price is $500 initial for equipment installation & $50/mo rate. Anybody know anything re: this system?

I cannot get DSL (for now at least) & don't know about cable; gotta check on that one.

But I'm ready to get onto something other than "dial-up"! Too many delays, drops, snail speeds etc.

Well almost three years ago I sold my soul to prodigy. I took one of thoes deals where they gave me a big rebate on a CPU in exchange for a three year contract at 19.95/mo. Up until this week I was happy with prodigy, but now they have become SBC Yahoo Dial. So far I don't like SBCYD! Come October when my contract is up I will be looking at other options. Possibly cable, but I'm not sure I want to spend the bucks for it.

I use NTS $9.95 great deal only 56k howevr unless you download a lot or are a gammer, OR talk one on one via modum. You do not need cable.
I have 3 domains build sites all the time and have only wanted cable for about 2 minutes every month when I get a new prog. HE HE heres NTS's Link check em out NTS/$9.99

19.95 is the unlimited plan around here. And yes it is very high from Directv, dsl is so outragous, and swbell.net is not in my area. So we are a dial up family. Everyone seems to be much cheaper than me. Think I will send this page to my server.

Probably because there is a bit of delay involved (since the signal has to go into orbit and back down again) and from what I hear the satellite connection is only for downloads, uploads are via phoneline and so while your download speed might be good, you're stuck at 33kbps for uploads.

That is steep. I'm surprised you don't have any options. In our area, there is healthy competition as several DSL providers, cable providers and even DirectTV offer high-speed connection.

I use Bluelight Internet Service, unlimited access, $8.95 a month. I usually connect at around 44000 Bps.I am very happy with it.
If anyone is wanting to use them and cannot find an install CD, E- Mail me and I would be glad to burn one and send to you.
I would still prefer cable connect but we do not watch tv and there is the cost factor(we homeschool).
