How much do you visit?

I love to visit church members in their homes, especially when they invite me and cook me dinner.

I purpose to visit the children when I can.

Why? Because I love them.

I visit church members...
When there is a death or sickness in the family.
When they have been missing church frequently.
When I feel they are in need of extra encouragement.
When they have need of spiritual direction or instruction.

Not necessarily a complete list, but basically I visit them because I am a shepherd and sheep need care. (There is a difference between care and "petting". I know what that is and try to avoid it.)

When I was a rural church pastor I tried to make the rounds of my congregants' homes over the course of a month. That is much harder to do with a larger, younger, urban congregation that is never at home.

One thing that we seem to have lost sight of as a culture is the concept of neighborhoods. At least around here, people can live for years in a house without ever knowing the name of a single person on their street. Their social and recreational activities take place all over the city, so they aren't very likely to see their neighbors at their church, favorite restaurant, movie theatre, dance club, etc. I can't even remember the last time I saw someone I knew at the grocery store.
