The vet fought in the ETO. So, he wasn't going up against the Soviets or Japanese.

Though, I did come across this comparison years ago:

What would happen on the front lines during WW2 if all the officers disappeared\died?
    Soviet\Red Army:
The troops would stop where they were. They didn't know where they were going. Maps were too classified to be trusted to front line formations. So, they wouldn't go forward. They wouldn't go back because there were NKVD machine gun posts ready to shoot anybody panicing and running to the rear.
    British\German Armies:
The NCOs would assume command and take the next tactical objective. And then dig in.
    US Army:
The NCO's would say "Whew, got rid of the dead wood." and then take Berlin.
Don Rickles' great WW2 fanatsy movie Kelly's Heros plays on this. The story could only be told about the US Army. The NCOs in any other Army wouldn't have thought about putting together such a scheme.

I know you are being facetious because many French units did indeed fight well when properly led, as the armored forces under General De Gaulle showed. Unfortunately, the Germans were well motivated and had the upper hand with their "Blitzkreig" tactics.

I love the part where Rickles is bitching and moaning about having to carry that machine gun after their vehicles were destroyed. That was very funny!

Yeah, I guess the bit about the unused French WW II rifle is an old joke. The Russians discovered how to defeat Blitzkreig. As for the French, they surrendered shortly after Dunkirk. In the long run, Germany did not have sufficient air power. Per capita, I think the Greeks lost the most.
