If you brought a lost visitor to church on Sunday morning and the sermon was about "Hell," how would you want that sermon to be delivered?

Would you favor a "Hell-fire and Brimstone" type of message or would you favor a "God is love and does not want you to die and go to hell" type?

First of all lost by whose definition?... I know plenty that are lost to the truths as they are in Christ Jesus! If they are so lost what are they doing in church in the first place?... The Primitive Baptist brethren preach hell as this is what we all deserve without the intervention of Jesus Christ sacrifice. They maybe lost to your way of thinking but God NEVER lost a one. There is plenty of hellish situations that Gods children get theirselves into without speaking of hell and damnation. There is a Heaven and there is a Hell but because of Jesus I don't worry about eternal hell. Neither do I worry that God will lose a one as they are NEVER lost to God... All the Father giveth me shall come to me... Drawn by the love of the Lamb of God!... This is what we believe and preach!... Brother Glen [IMG]

I am referring to a man/woman/boy/girl who has yet to repent of their sins and invite Jesus Christ into their heart to be their personal Lord and Savior. In short, they haven't been saved yet.

Romans 8: 28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.

29 For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren.

30 Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified.

Romans 9: 11 (For the children being not yet born, neither having done any good or evil, that the purpose of God according to election might stand, not of works, but of him that calleth;)... Not by the biblical or the definition of the Primitive Baptist brethren... Brother Glen [IMG]

The Bible has a mutitude of items that need to be preached. I think that when preachers concentrate on only one or two items, they do their congregations a disservice.

If the preacher is being led by the Holy Spirit, then it's immaterial to me which type he preaches! Only God knows exactly what it will take to reach the lost visitor!

You misunderstood the question. The topic for that service was hell.

I would favor a "God is love and does not want you to die and go to hell" type message. I find that the first is often done in a way that is offensive and can leave that person with a false idea of a loving God.

One time I heard a missionary speak on Hell and he brought slides of a volcanic lava and facts describing how hot it was. Thus his love for people was so great that he wanted to witness to as many people as he could, so they would never have to face this picture of Hell. That left an impact on me. Often I ask people who don't give a second thought to life after death if they would hold their finger under a lighter for just two minutes. Asking them, IF there is a Hell (and there is) would you be willing to go through life not even trying to determine if there is a God, Heaven or Hell? What a gamble.

I would want the Preacher to give a message that is factual, and biblical. I brought a person to church one time and they got to hear a message about the pastors "dream" of what Hell might be like. If the message is going to be on Hell, then I believe it would be good to explain to them the differences in the NT Greek words. Explaining what the underling original words mean, and how what they are:

I would want the pastor to explain that when a person dies now, they go to Hades, then later to the great white throne to face their judge. Then cast into Gehenna.

I think a good text would be that of Luke 16, showing that there is a real hell fire. And in that place the rich man could remember his life, remember his lost brothers, realized he was wrong, felt pain, was in torment, could not get relief, was separated from God, and did not have a second chance.

Also I would include how that a person goes to this place because their sin separates them from God, and that it is a rejection of Jesus Christ as savior that causes them to go there. Therefore it is their own choice to reject Christ as savior, and later face Him as Judge. Often this point is clouded when pastors use this to preach hard on sin, and people think that sin sends them to Hell. They also feel that they need to stop sinning to be free from Hell. But God is love, so much so that He sent His son to pay for our debt, give us His sinless life, and rise again to give us life, and that life is eternal.

Jesus preached hell just as it is. Many famous preachers did it the same way. The first time I heard about hell was after I was saved and glad that I was. I would think that telling the truth is the best way. Don't sugar coat it, and don't make it sound as if it were something you really don't have to worry about at this time.

If I knew it was being preached, I would wait for another Sunday to take my friend.

If I and my friend attended any Hell-fire service and he accepted Jesus as his savior, I would doubt his reasons, belief, and understanding of what he just did and the motive for doing so. Fear of hell shouldn't be a factor in a Christian's conversion. Too bad the ignorant fall for such hard sell tactics. A slave will obey the master that holds his life in his hand, but then hate him for the same reason.

I wonder how many Christians would leave the faith if they weren't being extorted with the False Hell Doctrine instead of what scripture teaches "death". The wages of sin is death: not torture.

Love would be the over riding theme, but I would come from a character of God point of view. God loves there is no doubt about that, but God also is holy and therefore can have nothing to do with sin, if you remain in your sins (read unsaved). You are going to hell which is what you deserve, that is why we call it GRACE, when we accept Christ as our Savior.

Great topic, and one that isn't preached as much as it should be.

I say we should preach hell as often in our ministry as Jesus did, which was quite often. And I believe we should preach the message the same way that Jesus did, forthright, and without reservation.

Granted God's love sent Christ to the cross, but it's his wrath that sends them to hell.

Personally I would preach the message the same way as I had prepared it, ( which is usually a balance of the love and wrath of God )regardless of who was there. ;)

Are you suggesting Christ was a false teacher when he talked of hell (cf. Mark 9:43-48)??

I don't. I was asking you that question. YOu said hell was a false doctrine. Christ clearly taught about the existence and nature of hell. I am asking you if you are suggesting that Christ was a false teacher for teaching what you have called a false doctrine?
