What does it mean to be Biblically humble & meek? (as in the Matt. 5 beatitude meaning). What do you think "humble & meek" means in practical day to day living? Any examples? How do you differentiate between being humble & meek - and - those who are just weak? I thank you for your kind reply [IMG]

Well I will start. Humble and meek does not mean taking everyones meaness.

Weak is saying I can't do it Lord. I cannot even stand on my own 2 feet without you Lord to hold me up. I can only exist in your presence Lord. Weak is not resisting the Lord. Weak is submissiveness to the Lord.

Meek is standing firm in what the Lord says. Meek is not being weak. But being quick in the Lord. Meek is expressing the Lord, knowing how to do it with Love and compassion. Meek is holding no grudges, but handing out forgiveness. But in all distingushing between right and wrong. Meek is never being more than someone else. Meek is like allowing someone to go ahead of you in line for the last scoop of your favorite Ice Cream. Its ok. God will provide a new and better flavor.

Humble is to me like...laying at Gods feet, thanking Him for all that He has created, for Jesus, and knowing nothing is possible without first knowing that God is God. Then all is possible. Humble is being in submission to God, and His word. Humble is knowing nothing is mine and I am very lucky to have a roof over my head...food to eat...bills paid...healthy children. Knowing all things come from God. He decides all things, and allots all things. Humble is placing God before all things.

Humble is below being proud, yet in joyous cries that the Lord has granted for me this moment His mercy. Humble is knowing He gave His Son for me, and His Spirit dwells in me.

Humble is being in all repect to my Father God, laying at my Fathers feet to be His submissive servant.

Well that just a start for me.

Good answer. I have always described meekness as submission to the will of God.

Humility is closely related to that. It is the idea of one not thinking too highly of himself.

I think that wearing a bow tie is usually one of the outward proofs of true humility and meekness.

Men wearing bow ties are, to me, huggable. I
think they're cute, but I would rather be marrried
    to a suspender man. 8oD !

That's funny, I always thought men who wore bow ties weren't smart or talented enough to tie a real "winsor" knot. :D :D [IMG]

Meek and humble? I probably would have given some kind of theoretical answer until I met Barry, who is now my husband.

He is meek and humble. He is also one of the most faithful to God and brilliant men in the world. He has every reason for pride in his accomplishments and what he says about himself is, "Well, it took me long enough to get to this point and there is still so much more to do!"

He played card games and silly games with a nine-year old on his recent 14 hour flight between Australia and California.

He slows down enough to not only talk to, but respect, my unsure and unkempt 26 year old son, who is brain damaged. Barry sees into his confused and longing heart and responds to that.

He greets each cashier by name when we go through a store, assuming they have on their name tags.

He exclaims over the beauty of a sunset, an autumn leaf, and shed a couple of tears at the ending of The Glenn Miller story on video.

He feels no threat when I challenge something he has said in any subject and quietly explains to me why he thinks the way he does. And, on the rare occasions when I have a point, he cheerfully concedes. Not only cheerfully, he gets a kick out of it.

He has been insulted by people publicly, on the net, and in letters. He has NEVER retaliated. He is misquoted, misunderstood, misinterpreted, and misused. When it hurts, he keeps it to himself and when he is exasperated by it he simply says "Oh GRIEF!"

Rather than tell someone they are wrong, he will help them explore their own ideas.

He asks for directions at gas stations.

He considers himself of no account other than being, in his words "the suit of clothes that Jesus wears."

He hurts with those who hurt and rejoices with those who rejoice without thinking whether or not it makes him look silly.

When I have done something wrong, he finds an excuse why it was the obvious thing for me to have done at the time! If he feels I am wrong about something, he does not confront me -- he does not consider his own pride at all. He prays about it, and let's God handle the situation. When I find my attitude changing, thus correcting the wrong, I have found myself mock-glaring at him and saying "You prayed about this, didn't you?" and he will just smile...

He is a truly humble and meek man. He has put actions and living into those words and they mean more to me now than they ever did before.

Helen, I didn't know that you knew my husband ;)

With just a few changes, you could have been writing about my husband. He is wonderful
[IMG] So Barry must be wonderful, too [IMG]

I have never known anyone as proper and considerate as my husband. He walks with the Lord and is humble and meek, but strong in his faith.

I have a hard time with meek and humble. Even when I think I'm being that... People get on me and tell me to be humble. I think some people think being meek means to be a doormat...and to be humble means to be silent.

Not speaking about my husband and our relationship. But my relationships with anyone outside of my family. As for my family... We have a mutually kind relationship for the most part...mutually respecting each other...mutually enjoying each others stregths and weaknesses. He's a much better person than I am... much more likeable. I can't explain it...some people are just completely likable...and I'm lucky enough to be married to someone everyone likes.

Hi All! Thank you for the great replies (the serious ones and the humorous ones too). I love Sherrie's example about the "last scoop of ice cream." It's a great "picture" of the idea. I'm also impressed with the terrific comments that some of you mentioned about your husbands. Wow! They are very blessed men to have wives that love them as much as you all do.

As the years move on, I've come to learn ever so clearly that true "meekness" is almost always characterized by genuinue outward forgiveness and extreme kind-heartedness toward others. Meekness and humbleness is something that makes us POWERFUL. It is the very opposite of weakness. (2 Cor. 12: 10).

We do not have to be "doormats" to be meek. We can speak BOLDLY - but always salted with love and a rock hard ability to endure insult without responding in like kind. THAT is true Biblical meekness as I see it.

If we "think of ourselves" as being "meek and humble" then maybe we are not? If we LIVE it, then we are! Thank you again for the comments. [IMG]
