First there was Paul Crouch's buddy Jack Graham, then there was the bean counter Bobby Welch, and now the theological sloppy Johnny Hunt. When will the Southern Baptist Convention stop promoting these "popular evangelicals" and start promoting some real Bible teachers? Its not from a lack of real Bible teachers, so it must be a lack of desire. It is a sad day for those of us who are Southern Baptists. :tear:

Granted, I haven't spent alot of time on the issue, but what about Dr. Hunt's theology is sloppy? Everything I've heard him say and everything I've read has been right on. Could you please elaborate Martin? Thanks.

Could it be that he doesn't use a particular version of the Bible or that his church is too big? Personally, everytime I've heard him preach or teach it was right on.

I agree and here is one of his best sermons:

    It's still the cross!

I wasn't trying to "lower the boom" on Martin or be overly controversial. My question is sincere, and not meant disrespectfully.

Most popular evangelicals are orthodox in their theology. So we are not talking about heresy or anything like that. What I am talking about is his ability to agree/disagree in an informed manner on difficult theological issues. Hunt has proven that his ability to do that is rather limited. He maybe a good preacher, but he is not a theologian. We need a theologian not a good preacher.

It comes down to the fact that Hunt doesn't agree with Calvinism and that is what Martin is meaning when he states we need a theologian and not a good preacher.

Sorry, but if the man is not a good preacher (regardless of if he is a theologian or not) he doesn't need to be anywhere near leadership.

[In general] I would rather a man in there whos heart is seeking what God desires over a theologian any day though I would pray for a man of both.

I agree, the last thing we need is a theologian. I'll take a preacher whose is out there on the front lines, not locked away in a library or lectruing in the sanatized seminary environment.

The SBC is big, very big. Is it a preacher the SBC needs to lead them or a compassionate pastor? Just curious about your thoughts on this.

How about a combination of the two. A true compassionate person will preach the truth. Which is more compassionate, to tell the truth leading people to repentance even though some may get mad at you, or to tickle ears leading them to a sinner's hell? T

==The fact that many people share that view of a person who carefully studies the Word of God is sad. There are many theologians who are wonderful men of God who preach the Word of God. I think of men like Albert Mohler, Paige Patterson, Daniel Akin, and others. All of those men, btw, are Southern Baptists.

==Actually, that is not true. Anyone who is familiar with me knows that I support preachers on both sides of the Calvinism debate. My "beef" with Hunt is not simply about Calvinism.

I would thank you to not attempt to read my mind.

==We should look for someone who has all of those qualities. A theologian who is a passionate preacher of God's Word and who has a heart for God's people. It is sad that many Christians believe that we have to choose.

Dr. Hunt is well qualified for this position and the right man for the job.

I don't see a dime's worth of difference between him and my former pastor Bobby Welch, except I don't think he'll abandon his church during his presidency as Mr. Welch did during his.

Why do we necessarily "need" any of a 'preacher', 'pastor', or a 'theologian', as President of the SBC?

Why not someone who is none of the above, such as several who have served as SBC President in the past, who were laymen, including such previous leaders as denomination layman and employee James L. Sullivan; businessman Owen L. Cooper; Congressman L. Brooks Hays, and Governor and College President Pat M. Neff?

While there is certainly nothing wrong with being either a 'preacher', such as 'megachurch' Pastor Dr. Jack Graham: a 'church 'starter' and 'grower', such as Dr. James Merritt; a pastor of a 'good size' church, such as Dr. Frank S. Page or an academic and theologian, such as Dr. L. Paige Patterson, there is (or at least should be, IMO) no 'need' that the SBC President has to be any of these.
