I am the bread...

“I am the living bread which came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever; and the bread that I shall give is My flesh, which I shall give for the life of the world.” John 6:51 NASB

This verse is one of several where Jesus said He was the "bread." Next Jesus says the bread He will give is My flesh.

Some scoffers actually, but hopefully in jest, claimed Jesus advocated cannibalism. So how should we interpret this verse?

1) First it pictures the Old Testament account of "Manna from Heaven" as a provision to those delivered out of Egypt.

2) Before anyone can "eat of this bread" it must be given.

3) What action is pictured by "eating?" Jesus gave, laid down His life, as a ransom for all. But in order to receive the reconciliation provided by His sacrifice, we must "receive" the reconciliation. My view is anyone who receives the reconciliation "eats of this bread."

4) When we are reconciled, having now received the bread, the reconciliation, we have eternal life.

Putting this study into words,

I am the means of reconciliation, which was given by the God of Heaven. If anyone receives this reconciliation, he or she will have everlasting life. I sacrificed My life to become the means of reconciliation to provide the opportunity of eternal life to all of humanity.

Interpretation:

1) Living Bread = Means of Reconciliation

2) Eat of this Bread = Receive the Reconciliation

3) I came down from Heaven = in a similar fashion to manna coming down from Heaven as God's provision

4) He will live forever = He or she will have everlasting life

5) I gave my flesh = I sacrificed by physical, in the flesh, life to provide the opportunity of everlasting life to all humanly.
