I figure most people who know about computers are named Joe and that would get their attention. [IMG] Even if you're not Joe, you may be able to help.
We had a storm and lightening hit really close. The computer was shut down but still plugged in. Now I can't hear the modem working. I can hear the computer dial, but no pick up and the message is "the modem did not detect a dial tone".
I checked everything and nothing seems wrong. I updated everything, the connections are fine, the port settings are fine, I did everything possible to see what the problem was and cannot find it.
Do you have any suggestions or any idea on what it would cost to fix it or if something like this is fixable?
I'm gonna die if it's something very simple because I'm so stubborn I haven't asked for help because I wanted to do it myself and it just isn't working. :(

Depends on what got fired. If it was your modem then a 56k dial up is cheap. You can probably get one at Best Buy or any other electronics store starting around 29.99 and there are always rebates. I paid only 19.99 for one a few years ago.

Is everything else working properly? If so then even if its not the modem it might just be the pci slot the modem is in. If thats the case all you need to do is move the modem to a new pci slot.

Those are the only simple things I can think of.

The phone line may have taken a hit too. Unplug the computer phone line and leave it disconnected for at least 10 minutes. Try it again.

Also.... plug it in to another phone jack and try there.

Modems don't cost a LOT but as a single mom, I know every penny is a lot! [IMG]

I have to agree....unplug it for a few minute and then try again. Also make sure the phone line is plugged into the back of your modem all the way.

One time that happened to me. I think I unplugged for a while and then plugged back in.

    TY Bill, I'll try that.
I did leave it unplugged for a day, didn't help.

Ok, the problem is with the printer port.

    This device has a problem Code=24 (ox18)

What's the next step to figuring out what exactly is wrong with it, do you know?

printer port?? what is your operating system? You might want to unplug & replug your printer. First make sure you don't have to go to remove & add hardware & prepare the drive to unplug it first.
Our printer was messed up the other day & had our computer doing allsorts of strange things! [IMG]

I had a similar problem one time with MSN internet. I don't know if it will help but I'll give you a couple suggestions. You can run Scan Disk and check your computer for errors since it was turned off incorrectly!

You may have tried some of these but try it again [IMG]
    1. Start up your internet program. Go to Connection Settings/Setup and Add a modem(Make sure it's the right one that you used before! and ake sure it hooked up correctly. You can always uninstall and reinstall the internet program but it may just be your modem/connection?

    2. If #1 didn't work, I would go to "My Computer" and then go to "Control Panel" (Please don't delete anything. Trust me! haha [IMG] )

    (For Windows 98)
This may not be for you? I don't know? it hard to tell from this side but....
You can go to add new hardware under control pannel and go through the process just to see if the computer is reading it(modem)? If not it will appear and you have to follow the steps to install correctly.

(For Windows XP)same as windows 98 (go to control pannel) but pick Network and internet connections then pick set up or change internet connection and give it a try.

I am not a computer genious (Yet, going to study soon ;) ) but that's what I would do and I have fixed many problems in my computer in the past [IMG]
