I see that my own Governor Busybody, I mean Governor Huckabee, is involved in this. I predict that this will go down the same slippery slope as tobacco. Folks like Governor Busybody, I mean Governor Huckabee, will decide that soft drinks are bad for adults too and then fifteen years from they will have added so many taxes to soft drinks that a can of Coca-Cola will cost $3.00 for a twelve ounce can.

Soda Distributors to End Most School Sales

By SAMANTHA GROSS, Associated Press Writer

The nation's largest beverage distributors have agreed to halt nearly all sales of sodas to public schools — a step that will remove the sugary, caloric drinks from vending machines and cafeterias around the country.

The agreement was announced Wednesday by the William J. Clinton Foundation and will also likely apply to many private and parochial schools.

"This is a bold step forward in the struggle to help 35 million young people lead healthier lives," former President Clinton said at a news conference. "This one policy can add years and years and years to the lives of a very large number of young people."

Under the agreement, the companies also have agreed to sell only water, unsweetened juice and low-fat milks to elementary and middle schools. Diet sodas would be sold only to high schools.

"I don't think anyone should underestimate the influence this agreement will have," Susan Neely, president and CEO of the American Beverage Association, which has signed onto the deal, said earlier Wednesday. "I think other people are going to want to follow this agreement because it just makes sense."

The agreement should reach an estimated 87 percent of the public and private school drink market, Neely said. Industry giants Cadbury Schweppes PLC, Coca-Cola Co. and PepsiCo Inc. and the ABA have signed on. Officials said they hope companies representing the other 13 percent of the market would follow suit.

The Alliance for a Healthier Generation, a collaboration between Clinton's foundation and the American Heart Association, helped broker the deal.

"The soft drink industry has decided that it won't wait to be pushed," said Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, the co-chair of the alliance. "It jumped in. ... It may be the soft drink industry, but they made a very hard decision."

Yep. In my district, they lock down the coke machines during school hours. Kids can get their sugar/caffiene rush after school, though.

Those machines paid for a lot of services that don't get funded now.

What they really want is to get rid of soft drinks and dispense Ritalin from vending machines! [IMG]

Imagine mandating the selling of healthy foods to captive kids* instead of junk! Yeah, what a buttinski

*they generally are not allowed to leave the premises so they are stuck with whatever the schools make available unless they bring it in with them.

You know, don't you, that the whole anti-aspartame conspiracy is co-ordinated by the Stevia industry?

My point is not about what kids are sold in school but that I see the treatment of soft drinks and "junk" food starting to head down the same Big Government path as was used against tobacco and will end up down the road with those that drink soft drinks and eat "junk" food paying through the nose and being ostracized by society. I don't think that this movement will be satisfied with merely controlling what kids are consuming during their time in the government schools.

I'm glad tobacco has been stigmatized. I'm allergic to the smoke.

Tobacco was stigmatized a long time ago in my family. I was raised to believe it was disgusting and a sin. Never even tried a ciggarete. Seems to have worked.

Although I think smoking is quite nasty, using the reasoning on stigmatizing it based on the fact that a few people are allergic, we need to stigmatize peanuts, laytex, cats, onions, garlic...

    Apples and oranges.

Your eating peanuts, onions and garlic may affect your breath, but that would not trigger and allergic reaction in me, but your smoke would. Processed foods which contain peanuts & other legumes must be so labeled now - not exactly a stigma. Cats already are stigmatized - people rarely bring their cats into public places.

    Question:

If daisy and I agree on something, should I hit "report post?"

People who write that sort of thing just don't realize how often and strongly I agree with them. I suppose that's because I usually post when I disagree with something. [IMG]

Mmmmmmmm, wood alcohol. Can I get a chocolate covered jelly doughnut to go with that? [IMG]

    Doh, right back at ya.

The effects of aspartame are documented by the FDA's own data. In 1995 the agency was forced, under the Freedom of Information Act, to release a list of ninety-two aspartame symptoms reported by thousands of victims. It appears this is only the tip of the iceberg. H. J. Roberts, MD, published the medical text "Aspartame Disease: An Ignored Epidemic" -- 1,000 pages of symptoms and diseases triggered by this neurotoxin including the sordid history of its approval. [See Video "Sweet Misery, a Poisoned World"]

Since its discovery in 1965, controversy has raged over the health risks associated with the sugar substitute. From laboratory testing of the chemical on rats, researchers have discovered that the drug induces brain tumors. On Sept 30, 1980 the Board of Inquiry of the FDA concurred and denied the petition for approval.

In 1981, the newly appointed FDA Commissioner, Arthur Hull Hayes, ignored the negative ruling and approved aspartame for dry goods. As recorded in the Congressional Record of 1985, then CEO of Searle Laboratories Donald Rumsfeld said that he would "call in his markers" to get aspartame approved. Rumsfeld was on President Reagan's transition team and a day after taking office appointed Hayes. No FDA Commissioner in the previous sixteen years had allowed aspartame on the market.

Dr. Betty Martini has worked in the medical field for 22 years. She is the founder of Mission Possible International, working with doctors around the world in an effort to remove aspartame from food, drinks and medicine. According to Dr. Martini, aspartame has brought more complaints to the American Food and Drug Administration than any other additive and is responsible for 75% of such complaints to that agency. From 10,000 consumer complaints FDA compiled a list of 92 symptoms, including death.

The history of aspartame and its approval has a political history as well as a scientific one. According to Dr. Martini,

"When Donald Rumsfeld was CEO of Searle, that conglomerate manufactured aspartame. For 16 years the FDA refused to approve it, not only because its not safe but because they wanted the company indicted for fraud. Both U.S. Prosecutors hired on with the defense team and the statute of limitations expired. They were Sam Skinner and William Conlon. Skinner went on to become Secretary of Transportation squelching the cries of the pilots who were now having seizures on this seizure triggering drug, aspartame, and then Chief of Staff under President Bush's father. Some of these people reach high places. Even Supreme Justice Clarence Thomas is a former Monsanto attorney. (Monsanto bought Searle in 1985, and sold it a few years ago). When Ashcroft became Attorney General, Thompson from King and Spalding Attorneys (another former Monsanto attorney) became deputy under Ashcroft. (Attorneys for NutraSweet and Coke).

"However, the FDA still refused to allow NutraSweet on the market. It is a deadly neurotoxic drug masquerading as an additive. It interacts with all antidepressants, L-dopa, Coumadin, hormones, insulin, all cardiac medication, and many others. It also is a chemical hyper sensitization drug so that it interacts with vaccines, other toxins, other unsafe sweeteners like Splenda which has a chlorinated base like DDT and can cause auto immune disease. It has a synergistic and additive effect with MSG. Both being excitotoxins, the aspartic acid in aspartame, and MSG, the glutamate people were found using aspartame as the placebo for MSG studies, even before it was approved. The FDA has known this for a quarter of a century and done nothing even though its against the law. Searle went on to build a NutraSweet factory and had $9 million worth of inventory.

Some pretty big names making some real good money forcing this stuff on the market. Enough to even turn snopes into a propaganda site for them.

    Who's being hoodwinked now? [IMG]
