    I think it was suggested this would happen when he joined hands with that other "bloke". Bad company, to say the least.

    Yes, politics will not be the same without Ian.

    Me? Balanced? How did that happen? I must be growing in grace... or maybe just getting older:D Actually I was once asked to stand for the DUP as a Belfast City Councillor, but I turned them down. Who knows, maybe I would have been leading Ulster by now. (There's a scarey thought)!

    Probably not. Although I think the UK government were holding him to ransom. That said, I think I would have been happier with the Sunningdale Agreement, but you know what they say, hindsight is better than foresight.

    Ah, yes, Sunningdale - that's going back a wee while!

    I wonder to what extent this is Paisley being stabbed in the back by his own side, following on from my earlier thread about his having to step down as Free Presby Mod here?

    It's hard to say, Matt, but I doubt the DUP will air their dirty laundry in public. Peter Robinson has been Paisley's right hand man for 29 years, so it seems unlikely that he would have pressed him to go. Some seen him as a liability, particularly as he cosied up to McGuiness, earning them the nickname of the "Chuckle Brothers." I think it was hard for many in the Unionist community to see the DUP in government with Sinn Fein, but it appears to have rubbed salt in the wounds when Paisley and McGuiness seem to have got along so well personally. There have been rumours that Jeffrey Donaldson was pushing for a new leader. Interestingly, he is the first to endorse Robinson as Paisley's successor.
