IE7 RC1 perils

    Just a heads-up here people...

    I consider myself a fairly tech-savvy guy who knows his way around a computer. While I am very pro-Firefox, I decided to give IE7 RC1 a whirl.

    Well, I didn't like it or the way it worked (wouldn't let WMP play and such), so I decided to get rid of it.

    First off, there is no uninstall routing with it. You must go to the Add/Remove section of Control Panel. No problem.

    So I go to Add/Remove. I found out that I had to have Show Updates ticked to see it... a minor annoyance. Anyway, I click and choose remove. It says I need to restart to finish the process. SO I do.

    Well, when my comp restarts, I get a message, "This application has failed to start because iertutil.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem." The application in question was explorer.exe (Windows itself)!

    Thus began a two day ordeal. Windows couldn't boot, even in safe mode. Windows wouldn't restore. Windows wouldn't repair. Windows wouldn't reinstall.

    I asked for help on the computer forum I help on, and was pointed in the right direction. A fella suggested I use ERD Commander (a rather expensive program). Well, I happened to have it (it was given to me by a friend). So, after a lot of trial and error, I finally figured out to use System Restore through ERD Commander and was able to get Windows to work again.

    I still don't have Internet Explorer back. IE7 is "uninstalled", but it won't let me put IE6 back on. I'm going to try to contact Microsoft, but I doubt I'll get anywhere.

    Like I said, consider this a warning before you take the leap.

    I used IE7 on Server 2003 Enterprise SP1 and it installed without a problem. I'll be sure not to try to uninstall it now :). It's better than IE6, but I still prefer FireFox though.

    Look into Acronis. Way better than Ghost and works quite well. I love restoring an entire image in 2 minutes when Windows decides to die. The alternative is a half-hour of reinstalling Windows and another 2 hours of installing apps and tweaking.

    Thanks for the heads-up, Trotter, but I wasn't touching IE7 with a 10 foot keyboard anyway. :smilewinkgrin:

    Thanks for the note about Acronis. I need a tool to image my D: drive that has all my sim racing stuff on it. It's taken me a very long time to get things the way I want them, and if I had to rebuild that drive for some reason, I would not be a happy camper.

    It gets better.

    I've about come to the conclusion that I am going to wipe my hard drive and start fresh (since Windows is so messed up). So I used Belarc Adviser to get a complete listing of everything on my hard drive.

    When I did, I found this:

    This is on a COMPLETELY patched and updated machine, by the way. So I updated Windows... I had to use Firefox to do it (with the IE Tab extension) since I don't have Internet Explorer anymore. I reinstalled all the patches and updates except for the ones regarding IEx... all of those failed.

    Still no IE, Windows is still messed up (but it hasn't crashed to BSoD lately), and I still can't play BF2 online.
