If he had been elected

May I, as an outsider, opine about the man I would have chosen? None other than Mr. Barry Goldwater.

I have four books about him, and followed him closely when he was running, and how the press bad-mouthed him and created the scare mongering that he wold quit on welfare and social benefits and including senior's benefits.......hogwash!

At any rate, he is my man.

First, I think this tends to present a false premise, namely that there were only one of two individuals who actually "lost the Oval office", since the other one was "elected President". during a Presidential election each four years. In fact, there have been probably at least a hundred individuals who "lost" a bid for the Presidency, no matter how remote this bid was, in every election cycle. And I'm sure I do not even remember every one who actually sought, to some degree, the nomination in any "major party", in any given year, let alone all the minor parties. So I will limit my comments to the above, and not make an impossible 'pick'.

I agree with Jim1999 about wishing Barry Goldwater had been elected in 1964.

Reminds me of this observation:

A friend told me that if I voted for Goldwater, there'd be a war in Vietnam. Well he was right! I voted for Goldwater and, sure enough, there was a war in Vietnam!

(NOTE: I personally didn't vote for Goldwater in 1964, but only because I was too young to. Back then you had to be 21 to vote, and I was only 18.)

Jack Kemp - when he ran for the GOP presidential nomination in 1988. I was a county chairman in his campaign and then became a congressional district chairman in his campaign. It's the only time that I felt like I was somewhere close to being a campaign insider.

 

Well, we have 2 unelected presidents.

Gerald Ford, who was not elected to national office.
George W. Bush who was handed the office by the Supreme Court to his first term.

The ones who lost whom I wish had won? Hmmmm....

Gary Hart could have given us some "Monkey Business",
Hubert Humphrey would have been interesting,
But I'd go with, oh, maybe George McGovern.

First of all Bob Dole. Then maybe the Monica L. mess would not have happened and Clinton would not have been worrying about his reputation and more focused on capturing Osama Bin Laden when he was offered to him and 911 would not have happened.

That is not true. Not even the Democrats, regardless of what means they used, were ever able to produce a vote count that put Al Gore into the lead in Florida.

What did you want, MP? For the recount to continue on for another six months to see if the Democrats ever got a count that they liked?

It is amazing that after the 2000 and 2004 elections when the Democrats were whipped there were all of these cries of election fraud. But in 2006 when the Democrats finally won an election we don't hear the Democrats all over the news claiming fraud. It just shows that the Democrats are sore losers while the Republicans take their electoral beatings like grown men and women.

 

The Democrats issued all sorts of dire warnings about potential election fraud before the election.

Must have been none, ' cause we didn't get any complaints.

Ross Perot. I thought he really had some possibilities and felt if he had won we would have ended up with a needed viable third party. But in the end I questioned his sincerity after he temporarily dropped out while gaining so much momentum. All along Clinton was so obviously parroting the ideas that were giving Perot success and as a result after that time I felt out of touch with the majority that would elect and then re-elect an obvious liar and morally depraved but good politician Clinton that would easily change his tune to what people would want to hear AND THEY WOULD BELIEVE HIS SONG AND DANCE AND BUY INTO IT, either that or maybe they just reveled in his cleaver deceitful tactics, I don't know what happened there but it was all to my amazement.

 

I'd rather have seen a Jimmy Carter second term than the election of a second rate actor.

The most interesting "what if" that I can think of is what if Robert Kennedy had not been shot in June 68. He would have gone on to win the Democratic nomination, and probably would have beat Nixon. Although I voted for Nixon, looking back, not sure he would have done any worse.

 

Richard Nixon was a brilliant man. He had within him the ability to become one of the greatest Presidents. It is a tragic story.
