the wife, who is a fairly good teacher, will be leading a womens's Bible study this fall and many of the participants will be ladies from the church I pastor. She is doing so without my ascent or approval, and because of that I am praying through whether or not this is the line I will have to draw./QUOTE]
I'm confused, why does she need your ascent or approval? There is a difference between true confrontation and walking around with a stick to poke a hornets nest.
As the pastor, I am responsible for both providing and protecting the people of the church I pastor. No one preaches from pulpit unless I prayerfully approve them and I maintain a similar standard for those that teach Sunday School classes and Bible studies.
Obviously if there is a point of contention theologically or if there is another concern that could potentially bring harm to the fellowship, the relationships we share, or deviates from the vision/mission of the church those are things I must be mindful of and avoid if at all possible.
That said, I also believe that every teacher, man or woman, should only teach under the authority of the church and to the pastor of their church. While you may not like the example, Beth Moore operates under a similar set of guidelines with her pastor and her husband. In every other situation where an outside ministry or sister church wants to lead a small Bible study and will be inviting folks from the church I pastor to participate, there has been open communication prior to the study starting.
To give some additional context, this same person came to me last year asking if it would be OK to teach a women's Bible study even though she really wasn't being a faithful church member. My instruction to her then was that she could lead the study so long as she was faithful in attending the regular ministries of the church and that she needed to be praying about where God would have her in terms of her church membership. I believe she did the right thing last year, and has failed to do it this time around.
As a pastor yourself, you may OK with a situation like this as I have described it... I am not. It isn't simply about the teaching issue, it is far more complex due to the situation I described in my initial response.
