If you had it to over, what quetions would you ask your puplit commitee?

    I am currently in a series of meetings with an interested pulpit commitee in an area I am wanting to minister in. If you could do it over what questions or concerns would you express to the Pulpit commitee of the church you are currently serving?

    If I were to call your former pastor, what would he say was his greatest frustration (and greatest pleasure) during his tenure at your church?

    You need to have a detailed job description. You need to be aware of their expectations of you before you take this position. That will give you freedom to do your job without wondering if you are doing what is expected and it will allow you to avoid unnecessary activities.

    I would also stress that they are calling you and not your wife. My wife is not the Assistant Pastor. I do not expect her to teach Sunday school, head the ladies Bible Study, work in the nursery, sing in the choir, work on a bus route, etc... unless she feels God would have her do so.

    My wife's ministry is first to me as her husband and second to our children as their mother. Too many churches place unreasonable expectations on the Pastor's wife not realizing that the greatest help to the church comes from her taking proper care of the Pastor.

    I would ask for:</font>
    • An accurate flow chart of how every part of the body functioned</font>
    • A copy of the budget and annual report, detailing the what and why</font>
    • Freedom to contact former pastor and former member for THEIR evaluation</font>
    • A private list of the elders/deacons finances (like a 1040) since they will control and make all decisions on YOUR finances, you should know their bottom line. I'd check out such financial records in a secular job; why not the church?</font>
    • The 1 year, 5 year and 10 year goals for the church. If they are not heading the same way God is leading you, why get on board and "buck heads"?</font>
    • Who are the de facto leaders (who everyone will go to or whose opinions everyone respects and will not buck) and could you speak privately with them?</font>
    • What each of THEIR roles will be to make your pastorate successful and glorifying to God</font>
    What kind of reputation does this church have in town? Check with the Chamber of Commerce, City Hall, Police, etc and find out what the track record is.
    No where have I seen more errors in judgment than with pastors and pulpit committees. They all feel that if it's "God's Will" (nebulous at best in most minds) all the details will work out. A person who listens to that kind of advice will someday realize he had a fool for a counselor.
