If you have Irish heritage.....

I have Irish descent, but live anywhere in the E.U. ?

To paraphrase Muhammad Ali - "I'm glad my granddaddy got on that boat."

 

Just missed as my maternal great grandparents were both born in Ireland, making my maternal grandmother 100% Irish, but born in America.

Thinking my great grandmother would wax lyrical about the green isle of her youth, my aunt asked what she thought of Ireland, and this was her reply: "It was a horrible place, there was not enough to eat." When did she come to America? Circa 1840 and the cause was famine.

 

Most of my family just identifies as "American" in the census now since we've been here so long, but I have a great-grandparent that was from Ireland.

I missed out by 1 generation! Haha

 

My wife’s grandparents came from Ireland.
Soon after we married they invited the “clan” to a tour of their old home.
We didn’t have two dimes to rub together and declined.

…if I could only tell my younger self that I’d lend him the money.

My daughter gave us a DNA kit a few years back.
Amazing how it was able to trace my wife’s ancestry back to the exact village where her grandparents lived.

Thanks, I am proud of my Irish ancestry, as I am of my American Pioneer ancestry, and my English ancestry. But our most important ancestry are the individuals who influenced the culture in which we came of age. For me, and many of my age, it was the greatest generation.
