My daughter is just begining a section in her Keepers at Home handbook which requires her to read 25 biographies/autobiographies. We would really like to keep her within the IFB group so that is why I am posting in this section. Moderators, if you feel this should be in another section, feel free to move.

Anyway, what bios have you read that you would recommend?

My daughter is 12, but she can read the KJV Bible with understanding, so any age level will be fine.

One of the best biographies I have ever read is, TOM MALONE "THE PREACHER FROM PONTIAC" (JOYCE VICK). I had the pleasure of typesetting and designing the layout of this book while working at the Sword of the Lord. In this process, I had to read the book at least three times. It never got old. It was amazing to read the struggles he went through early in his ministry and how the Lord brought him through it all.

If you would like to see the rest of the biographies/autobiographies they have go here:

Of the biographies sold by the Sword, your daughter will absolutely be fascinated by the Bill Rice stories, Cowboy Boots in Darkest Africa and Noel, the Lovin' Lion. Uncle Bill (my great uncle) was a fascinating character and the best story teller I ever knew.

Other books on the Sword list that I have read and loved are: Double-Breasted (Dr. Lee Roberson, who ALWAYS wore a double-breasted suit), The Life of D. L. Moody by his son, Profiles in Evangelism by Fred Barlow (various short biographies), R. A. Torrey, Apostle of Certainty by Roger Martin, and Through Sunshine & Shadows, the fascinating autobiography of Monroe Parker, director of my mission board for many years.

Of these, Moody and Torrey were not strictly speaking IFB, but they had much to do with founding Fundamentalism, so they are important to us IFB'ers.

Also throught the Sword, The Story of the Bill Rice Ranch] by my cousin Pete Rice is good, too. I have a soft spot for this one, since I kind of grew up with the BRR and spent many happy hours there as a kid. I was born in 1951 and it was founded in 1952.

I don't know why the Sword does not have any biographies of John R. Rice anymore. That is a real shame! However, you can get the two main ones 2nd hand on Amazon.com, Man Sent from God by Bob Sumner and Captain of our Team by "Miss V." Viola Walden. Of those two, Sumner's would be easier for your daughter. Fred Barlow also wrote a short one John R. Rice, Giant of Evangelism that she can read on the Internet at: http://www.gotothebible.com/HTML/ricegiant.html

Why do you want to stay within IFBdom? Nothing wrong with that there are plenty of good men, like Squire mentioned, but you are missing out on a wealth of rich spirtual heritage by only going back the past 30-50 years.

Consider some of the early Baptist leaders in America, like Issac Backus.

With a requirement of twenty five biographies, I dare say the girl is going to cast a large net. The men I mentioned just aren't the usual suspects.

Thank you for all the feedback. These sound great!

The reason I'd like to keep mostly within the IFB is I don't want my daughter reading about someone who may have some whacked-out spiritual ideas. There is so much of that these days. She is not old enough to be discerning. Bob Jones Sr. was a Methodist--but he believed like an IFB. Others like him I would trust also. I hope you can see where I am coming from. Maybe I should have said that I prefer people who believe like IFB. There is so much confusion now days. I am an avid reader, but I am very careful of what I read anymore. I don't know myself who to trust among modern authors.

Pastor's Wife--you are blessed indeed to have had the opportunity to work at the Sword of the Lord. As a little girl I wanted to live there and wanted more than anything to sit on John R. Rice's lap. He looked so loving and kind. When I get to Heaven I want to look him up and throw my arms around him and tell him how much he helped me through his writings. Growing up he had much to do with my staying close to the Lord. My parents were first generation christians and we never talked about spiritual things. I was so shy I never would have talked to anyone else--so I read. John R. Rice never knew I existed, but I loved him dearly.

Squire--I will look up all the men you listed. I have heard of some of them. Your post will be most helpful.

John of Japan, I already have some of the books you mentioned. I really want to try to find some of the Bill Rice books. I read Brother Super as a kid (many times) and loved it. I always thought it so special that Bill Rice always called his wife Cathy "the princess". My daughter is a spirited, adventerous girl and I know she would love them.

You all have been most helpful. I have always thought if I was given a million dollars I would spend at least half of it on books!

All three of the Bill Rice books I mentioned are advertised on the SOTL website at http://www.swordofthelord.com/osb/showitem.cfm?Category=126
A couple of them are also on the Bill Rice Ranch website: http://www.billriceranch.org/publications/index.php?cat_id=27&catname='Great%20Books%20for%20Kids'

So you should be able to order them. [IMG]

If I had a million dollars, I'd just buy a Bible college library! [IMG]

I remember sitting on Grandpa Rice's lap when I was about 4, and he asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I knew I should be a preacher, but being a cowboy like Dr. Bill Rice was a most attractive proposition. So I said, "I wanna be a cowboy preacher!" :D

And then of course there was the time he spanked me for messing with the TV when he said I shouldn't. :( There, samerelda, eat your heart out about that!! [IMG]

We were blessed to have John R. Rice come to our church for a one night revival. I will never forget that night.

If you want to stay within "IFBdom" read the biography of Dr. Monroe Parker. He was the long time director of my missions agency, and a humble godly man.

Well, I was a little angel so he would never have had reason to spank me, unlike ONE of his grandsons! [IMG]
