Will the monetary costs of Katrina cause the Federal Government and the border states to rethink their do-nothing policy regarding illegal immigration?

No. President Bush has already made a deal with Vicente Fox that the 30,000 to 40,000 illegal aliens in the storm devastation areas will not be deported.

I am talking primarily about closing the borders.

It is not rational for me to believe that 5 - 10% of the population of the Katrina devestation were "illegals".

Unless their numbers have gone up 10 fold or more, I would guage illegal Mexican Nationals in that area at no more than 1% of the population. Only 3% of the population is "legal" hispanic.

PS It probably has more to do with:
    (1) Freeing up resources to deal with the crisis;
    (2) Removing fear from those that actually are illegal;
    (3) and not harrasing the (*)legal latino refugees than it does with actual concern about extradition.

(*) I doubt that more than a tenth of a percent of the people still have their birth certificate or passport ... That number is just a guess.

Well, you can guess all you want to, but Internet sources I've seen put the illegal alien population in NOLA and surrounding communities at anywhere from 30,000 to 40,000. And there has been a strong presence of drug trafficking and Mexican gangs in NOLA. The US Attorney General recently addressed the Hispanic gang problem at a conference in NOLA only a few months ago.

So, those people (if they are illegal aliens) will be immune from prosecution, now, and are being evacuated along with other evacuees into Houston, Nashville, and other communities as we speak.

The present administration will NEVER close the borders. Before 09/11, he had more or less promised open borders to Vicente Fox. President Bush is a globalist. And he has continued to show that through his terms and continues to show that even in this disaster by his ongoing willful neglect of enforcing our immigration laws.

That does seem to be the case doesn't it LE? While the republicans blame the liberals and the democrats blame the conservatives (and our eyes are fixated on the diversions of the [corporate friendly] media) both persuasions of government are concentrating all their efforts on globalization.

Welcome to the North American Community soon to be folded into the Global Community. Bye Bye government of by and for the people. [IMG]

I believe that the economic impact of Katrina will force action. Texas has 250,000 from NO. Can they afford to harbor illegals?

Please read and if possible address the OP:

Will the monetary costs of Katrina cause the Federal Government and the border states to rethink their do-nothing policy regarding illegal immigration?

The question is simple enough! The operative phrase is

Recent story claimed that 80% of the field workers in Washington State were illegals.

Old Regular, the answer is still "no" for the Federal Government. Out of frustration, a couple of weeks ago, the Governors of New Mexico and Arizona recently declared a "State of Emergency" so they could get their hands on federal funds to help with the illegal immigration problem which includes drug and human trafficking, added costs for public education and health care for illegals.

But again, the answer to your OP is "no." Sadly.

Closing the borders would interfere with the administrations plan to push through the FTAA. They don't want closed or protected borders, they want open borders to help create the "union of the Americas". Their solution to illegal immigration is to simply make it so that it is no longer illegal for anyone to come and go across our borders.

We have a serious illegal alien problem in Nashville Tennessee. They hang out in mass waiting for scap employers to pick them up. They are taking a job an AMERICAN or legal alien could do. They are involved in drugs and prostitution. Round up the illegals and deport them immediately.

If the USA would honor the jobs (in Mexico) that President Clinton promised them under NAFTA ... We would have more yankees employed and more Mexicans in Mexico. (*)

... I would bet it would be difficult to find enough Americans to do the work you are so worried about loosing ...

If you were promised a job ... you might go hunt it down also ...

    (*) ... Mexicans are AMERICANS ...
They are citizens of THE UNITED STATES OF Mexico
And they are NORTH Americans ...

    Second

    Where you see a Mexican - I see a Tejano ... I can tell a Mexican from a Tejano from a Puerto Rican ...

EITHER The illegal population in New Orleans went up 20 to 100 fold, or your internet sources are full of it.

40k is 10% of 400k (the official population) It is 5% of 800k (probable total population of New Orleans Metro)

There were NOT THAT MANY Latinos there PERIOD.

You have people trying to build up hysteria ...

Why would honest and law abiding Americans want other Americans to feel FEAR?

With a $13 trillion/year economy, the U.S.A. could have built a high-tech, Great Wall type of security wall along the Mexican and Canadian borders by now. We could use our armed forces to patrol the top of it and kill anyone who came close. We could put billions of land mines in the zone between the wall and Mexico. We could make the U.S. border the safest and most secure in the world. Why don't we? Because it's not a priority. And it won't be until it is found out that the terrorists who detonated the first nuclear bombs on American soil simply trotted accross the Mexican/U.S. border undetected and unapprehended.

    Bluefalcon,

I disagree and don't think such security is needed along the Canadian border. There aren't illegals crossing over in droves over that border. But, yes, fences, mines, and dogs on our Southern border.

There have been reports of terrorist crossing both the Mexican and Canadian border, we need to protect both!

Reagan said it best, "a nation without borders is no longer a nation."
