I'm having trouble with this song...help!

    I've been working on this song "Christ the Lord is Risen Today", and it sounds good as a Soprano song, but the refrain "Alleluia" sounds like a bird chirping! I've tried slowing it down, but it just sounds slow, and lacks the excitment and joy. I've tried singing it in Alto, but it just sounds boring, it lacks the excitment, too. Maybe a duet would work, but our Alto singer prefers modern songs, country-western type stuff. Not my thing, and not working for this song, either. So what is the solution? It sounds good acappella, but maybe too flighty and light. It's a difficult song to sing, and I've worked on it for months now. I can sing it very fast and strong, but it doesn't sound right to me, at least, not yet.

    Hard to help without hearing you... but I would lower the key a step or two if it's too high.

    Sing it fast enough to keep interesting, but not so fast it gets in the way of the understanding of words. Hope this helps!

    If you want the tune that is usually sung to Wesley's "Christ the Lord is Risen Today" poetry, it is called "Easter Hymn" and it was first published in 1708 in a songbook called Lyrica Davidica. Its composer is unknown according to Cyberhymnal. Anyway, I would try to find the original arrangement and see if it makes more sense when sung as a solo. Old hymn tunes have changed quite a bit over the last few years, and sometimes would not even be recognizable today.
