IMPUTE

One of the arcane words found in the KJV of the bible is "impute." It means to attribute something to something, such as righteousness to someone. The person "attributing" regards or considers, or credits someone or some aspect of someone as righteous. The word does not mean "import" or transfer or place into someone as if righteousness was some spiritual commodity that could be ladled on to a person. Total hogwash. The righteousness of Jesus is not scooped up and ladled on to believers.

If we look at all the NT places where the KJV chooses to use some form of "impute" we find other translations use a less ambiguous word for the modern reader.

Here are the eight places where a form of imputed is used in the NT: Romans 4:6; 4:8; 4:11; 4:22; 4:23; 4:24; 2 Corinthians 5:19; and James 2:23.

The NASB95 usually chooses a form of credit, for example credits or credited, instead of choosing "imputed." The NET usually goes with counted or credited. Ditto for the LEB.

Thus when you see posts where this arcane word is used, consider it might be being used to imply the false doctrine of "imported." Beware of double-speak.

I missed it because the KJV translated a different Greek word (ellogeō G1677) into the same English word "imputed." The NASB95 also uses "imputed" but the NASB20 updated "ellogeo" to "counted" and footnoted it as "credited to."

In my eight examples the Greek word is "logizomai" (3049) and where this Greek word appears in other places in the text, even the KJV translates it using other English words such as reasoned, numbered and reckoned.

Neither Greek word says nor suggests "imported."
