How many people have we freed?

    27 million in Iraq
    ??? million in Afghanistan

    ??? Former USSR

    ??? S. Korea

    ??? WW2

    ??? WW1

??? Slaves in our own Country

Not to mention all who've come to the US seeking political assylum from other countries...

And probably many others I failed to mention.

    Anybody have any ideas????

It does pose something interesting to think about....

I don't think we should ever gloat or boast about the number of people who have been given freedoms because of our actions. I do, however, think we should continue to be thankful that we've had the opportunity to have freedoms, and give freedom to others.

It isn't boasting or gloating if it is fact which refutes anti-American claims of American imperialism.

This thought came into my head over the D-Day remembrances this weekend when we did, indeed, Americans, Canadians, and Brits freed the people in France (and other European nations) who were under bondage from the Nazis. I was thinking how soon some people forget what our brave men spilled their blood for. Not boasting, just pointing out the facts. [IMG]

Good thought. Maybe should try to take an era of history and focus just on that.

    Like WWII.
340 million in Russia/Europe/North Africa freed from Hitler's tyranny + 600 million in China/Japan/India/SE Asia from Tojo's tyranny

That is amazing to consider alone.

I am so glad that a rider was added to the initial opener, the WE thing, the USA for sure was there but hey the world had to slog it alone for years in WW2, and please remind me when did the USA enter the arena of WW1.

The WE thing gives to my mind it was the USA alone who bought home the bacon.

I know that Australia would have been kowtowing if the yanks had pulled our kowhooleys out of the Japanese onslaught because this is where we discovered how remote we were to Britain.

Interesting thought Dr Bob I guess the Japanese would have invaded India as a dependency of Britain but do you think it would have been WISE...

Very impressive, but you guys haven't succeded yet. It still can all go sour in these 2 cases. Let's pray it won't.

    "??? Former USSR"
    ''
The USA can't take all the credit in this case. Still things like the Marshall plan helped immensely in curbing the spread of Communism.

    "48 million S. Korea"
    ''
Full credit here, very well done.

    "??? WW2"
    ''
Team effort in this case, the country that I life in for instance was mostly freed by Canadian soldiers.

    "??? WW1"
    ''
No freeing was done because of WWI

"??? Slaves in our own Country"
    ''
Nothing to be proud of here.

"Not to mention all who've come to the US seeking political assylum from other countries..."
    ''
I always heard that getting political asylum in the US was (and is) the pits.
Still over a period of several centuries it must number into the millions.

Mioque, I will take your comments with a grain of salt because you are a European, but the only reason that Europe's major powers have continued to make nice to each other and stay at peace is that after WW2 we encamped an American Army right smack dab in the middle of Europe, and though reduced, it is still there.

Sure and the EU doesn't exist and as such has had no impact at all. The only reason the French haven't invaded Belgium, while the Germans tried to conquer Sweden in the past 50 years is the continued US military presence.

Mioque, there is nothing in European history to even suggest that the EU would even exist had not a set of outside powers (since '90, one power) not set up the situation where these things were possible.

The USSR occupied half of Europe, and we the other half--especially Germany.

I love the United States and our record of aiding the spread of democracy and freedom throughout the world is great. But there are other things to consider.

I have to agree with mioque that it is to early to claim success in Iraq and Afghanistan. They don't exactly have great track records. South Korea is free but what about the North? How about Vietnam? Certainly not free and what about the persecution of Christians there and in North Korea? WW's I and II were certainly not actions by the US Alone.

Remember that every slave freed in America was also enslaved by America. What about the slave trade that we allowed to exist prior to the War of Northern Aggression? And slavery was not limited to the south, all 13 colonies allowed slavery in 1776. How about that minority group known as native Americans? We really brought them freedom didn't we?

The United States is a great nation and has many great people within it, but there are certainly some failures along the way. Lest we get to stuck on ourselves we should remember all the nations that have preceded us and are no more.

Thanks NC Tentmaker. Not only did America not free my Native American ancestors, their freedoms were actually taken away by the US government under Andrew Jackson. Their lands and possessions were stolen in Tennessee, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Alabama and they were forced to march (many to their deaths) to the Oklahoma territory.
Just think how you would feel if right now the government came and told you that your family had to leave your home and all your possessions and set out on foot a journey of thousands of miles to a place you knew nothing of and had no idea what was going to happen when you got there.

    Man's inhumanity to man, indeed.

The thing is, the United States is a great nation. We have brought freedom to many people. But it is a human government and there have been a lot of injustices and failures as well. I love politics and love to watch our government at work but whenever mankind looks to human government to solve their problems it will lead to failure. Some churches get so caught up in politics that they forsake the work of the kingdom of God. There is only one hope for the problems of this world and it is not the republican party or the democratic party or any other party, it is the return of Jesus Christ. Only then we the curse be lifted. Only then "God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away." Rev 21:4

Western Europe as vassal states of the US, Europeans that hold that peculiar perspective are usually the ones that despise the USA.
Americans that hold that peculiar perspective are often the ones that think freedom for foreigners is overrated.

Those are simply the facts. It is also a fact that in our half of occupied Europe, we moved from occupiers to shepherds to partners (NATO), while there was no real transition on the Soviet side, the Warsaw pact being a synonym for the Russian army.

The presence of US and Soviet forces in Europe had the happy side effect of enabling the Europeans (except in the Former Yugoslavia) to get over their 2,000-year habit of fighting each other.

Most would claim that the move from occupiers to shepherds happened so swiftly (not counting Germany) that the term occupiers isn't the right one (I suspect the modern politically correct would be: facilitators untill a proper local government is in place), The USA shared it's occupational responsibility with the French and the British from day one.

On the other hand the move from shepherd to (real) partner never seems to have taken place in the minds of many on both sides of the pond, considering the way the European members of Nato dropped the ball on Yugoslavia that may not be all that surprising.
You need real partners after all to be partner with, not a bunch of unruly children that need to be shepherded around.

We Americans treat the Brits with respect, the Germans as equals, and the rest of Europe as slightly above vassal level. You got the "unruly children" part right!

And no respect for the French. Last time we tried to help them was after Dienbienphu . .
