If I don't do this now, it won't happen until Tuesday, so let's get the review up now.

    1:00 PM
Picking it up on lap 48. My wife wasn't feeling well and didn't go to church, and afterwards, I picked up some Chinese for her and I and spaghetti for the kids and the race started while we were doing that.

    A few notes:
We listened to some pre-race on the radio and they sort of went on and on about how 11 drivers are rookies. The thing is that most of the drivers aren't true rookies, in that most of these guys came from Champ Car and they're rookies at Indy only. These are not wet-behind-the-ears rookies.

Graham Rahal's wreck was a true rookie mistake. There's no reason he couldn't have backed out of it just a little to get around the slower car going down the frontstretch.

    1:07 PM
My 9 year old asked if AJ Foyt IV was a rookie driver after the fire they had in the pits. I said, No, he's not a rookie. His problem is that his team is bad. Bad teams have fires in the pits during the Indy 500.

    1:08 PM
Watching Indy always reminds of watching it when I was a kid. *old creaky voice* When I was young 'un, we didn't get to watch the Indy 500 live. We had to wait until Sunday night to watch it on tape delay.

    1:10 PM
This guy who just wrecked, Marty Roth, isn't a rookie, but he made a rookie mistake. Of course, it's very easy for me to sit here and say this. These cars go so fast and the closing rate is so quick that it's pretty tough on them when something unexpected happens in front of them.

    1:21 PM
AJ Foyt. There is no bigger jerk in all of racing than AJ Foyt.

    1:30 PM
Speaking of Danica, ESPN Classic was showing old Indy 500's yesterday and they showed the 2005 race, where Todd Harris, the play-by-play guy, turned the race into the Danica Patrick show. It was her 1st Indy 500 and he spent the entire race talking about Danica. It was awful.

    1:38 PM
Diet Mountain Dew. Nectar of the gods.

    2:24 PM
Took a little nap and there are still 83 laps to go. How long was this race under yellow over the last hour or so?

    2:51 PM
Some nice racing going on here.

    2:55 PM
This is kinda like a demolition derby, but instead of wrecking everybody else, everybody wrecked themselves.

    3:12 PM
Yeah, that thing I said earlier about the rookies? Well, it hasn't been all rookies because Milka wrecked in the 500 in either 06 or 07, or both, but this race has been brutal. Seriously, this thing should be over by now. If the Cup race is like this, it won't be midnight till they finish.

    3:18 PM
Yeah, Danica's done. I don't know if they'll fix the car and get points or not, but, either way, she ought to just park it.

    3:19 PM
That wreck is Ryan Briscoe's fault as Michael said.

    3:22 PM
You can see Danica's pretty mad, and I don't blame her for it.

    3:23 PM
Scott Goodyear acts like Danica going down to Briscoe's pit is a bigger deal because she's a woman. Maybe it is, but I would expect a man to react like she is. So, no, I disagree.

    3:24 PM
I just counted 18 cars running. Almost half the field has wrecked out. Rather ridiculous.

    3:25 PM
Yeah, you might want to stay on the track at 220mph. No need for agricultural racing today.

    3:27 PM
With 20 laps to go, nobody is patient and they shouldn't be. Maybe this is why Scott Goodyear didn't win the 500. He was being too patient up until the final turn and then it was too late. He finished 2nd to the brilliant run by Al Unser Jr in 1992.

    3:28 PM
I wouldn't believe it about gas either if I were Scott. Last year, Scott lost the IRL championship because he ran out of gas on the final lap of the final race of the season.

    3:34 PM
Marco may pass Vitor Meira, but Scott Dixon's winning this race.

    3:35 PM
Yeah, that 2006 finish was incredible. Michael had a chance to win, Marco almost won and Sam Hornish was brilliant in winning.

    3:39 PM
That pass by Dixon of the lapped car into T1 was the race.

    3:40 PM
Just like in my simracing, the lapped cars are screwing up the race.

    3:41 PM
Danica and her giant sunglasses going through pit road.

    3:45 PM
Won the pole. Dominated and won the race. Fantastic.

    3:47 PM
I agree. I wouldn't pour milk on me. Milk's too good to waste like that. I'm sure it's nice and cold too, which is the only way milk should be.

    4:24 PM
My wife and I were talking about Danica going down to Briscoe's pit to express her displeasure and to show that she's right and he's wrong. And, of course, since she's a woman, she's right by default. :wavey:

Here's the thing about racing at Indianapolis, and this is true of the 500 and the Brickyard race that is run there. The finishes are not always thriling (through certinly there have been some thrilling 500 finishes in the last few years), but the finishes are always intense. Whoever wins is driving on the ragged edge at the end because there is so much pressure and prestige in winning at Indy. With three cars close behind him, the winner was driving hard at the end and I like that.

I don't think the IRL has the prestige of NASCAR right now. They definitely have some rebuilding to do. They will get tons of publicity for the Indy 500 in eight years on the 100th anniversary of the race. I think their job is to steadily rebuild the series between now and then try to come up to the level of NASCAR.

Some of us "relative" old-timers will always be nostalgic for the Indy 500 - the young'uns don't get it.

I, too, remember very well the delayed television broadcasts. Didn't matter what we were doing during the running of the 500, we had the radio on to catch the action live.

    Good report, CCR

Oh yeah....The old Offenhauser's that put out around 1000HP with 120inches of boost, before cutting it back. The old roadsters, Gordon Johncock in his Wildcat, AJ Foyt, with an Offy powered last successful effort at holding off the new rear engined Ford Cosworths. Fun stuff, thanks for the memories.

    SwaimJ...

When I was growing up (late 60's and 70's) Indy car racing was MUCH more popular than stock car racing. But there has been a real switch.

I think the "Danica Factor" might actually help Indy car racing get really popular again.
