I currently run Cybersitter as my filter system for the internet but am getting more and more frustrated with it. It is very effecient in blocking all types of adult content but it causes my Iexplorer to crash several times per day, refuses to allow news to be read if there is any thing sensual like the recent activities of Foley and will block web pages that for the life of me I can't understand, for instance the Nativity movie on another post was blocked this morning. It will not allow me (that I am aware of) to edit the word list so on one hand I like it but on the other hand it kills things I would like read.

What programs are other BB users running and what do you like or dislike about them? I would put this post in the computer section but it would seem to be more valid here in the general questions section.

I use B-Safe, which includes an accountability package that e-mails internet reports to whomever you wish.
    Stuff still gets through. :BangHead:

Here is a Consumer Review of the most popular ones.

    Deacon,

This is an illustration of what I am experiencing with Cybersitter. The site you posted was blocked, though I know why (to stop users from seeing how to disable the filter) there is no reason in my oppinion to block a consumer opinion site.

Is the b-safe program highly rated or is it in the middle of the pack?

Filters just add overhead and cause problems. Just don't go to sites you don't want to see.

As a wise old sage (I think Paul) once said, flee youthful lusts and if I am not mistaken he also said wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall. There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.

Perhaps the way to escape is an internet filter?

Nonetheless I understand what you are saying but knowing the weakness of the flesh why should I take a chance?

    thjplgvp,

I am a PC Doc on the side and I use TrendMicro PCCillin Internet Security 2006 and recommend it highly. I first tried it in 2005 for $19.95 (Google for the best CD price) for a year. I then paid 34.95 for the next 2 years to upgrade.

Best antivirus I know of and it automatically updates virus definitions at least twice a day, often more, and all you have to do is touch 'enter' and just keep going. And best of all, unlike Norton and some others, it doesn't bog down you computer, or make it sluggish in any way.

As for the firewall, it can be easily configured to allow what you want and disallow what you don't want. I've never seen any obscene material, links, or anything undesireable, and that's going with the default settings. The filter is easy to customize, which will solve your problem if the default settings don't. Most filters are too broad.

It's excellent for spyware, also. I would recommend Microsoft's Windows Defender, which is free, in addition, which gives you two active, 24/7 spyware protectors.

Also, FWIW, at least several times a week PCCillin blocks websites from getting my credit card number. It did that just an hour ago. I was reading a thread here and followed a link to a pastors.com article, one of Rick Warren's websites. And something on that site was trying to get my credit card number. I finally had to release the block in order to get to the article, the first time that's ever happened. I shouldn't have but I really wanted to see the article. Usually it just notifies you that the block has occured and who it is that's after your personal information.

    Hope this helps.

I think you should get in touch with the webmaster of that website or whoever maintains it and report that hacking attempt.

I used to visit a discussion board of Filipinos and somebody had a malicious software embedded in their website which filtered in obscene material despite the blockers I had in my system.

    I told the webmaster.

They shut the site down for a few weeks, probably trying to trace the intruder, and when they got it back up, the hack was gone.

By the way, why is this thread not in its proper forum, the computers and website forum ?

Sister Sue!! I have "Be Safe" filter system---been using it now for 5 1/2 years years. I tell people that it'll filter out Captain Kangaroo and Bugs Bunny if they knew any of the characters were --- you know --- a tad funny!!!

When we first got the system - - - it took my wife a little while to catch on to exactly what they block. When "Pop Ups" are blocked or advertisements in newssources are blocked - - - it'll show the block on screen!!! Well - - - my wife will start a full scale investagation

"Whats that blocked on 2theadvocate?? Its something nasty isn't it??"

    I tell her

"No tellin'!!! It could be an ad for a casino or some sort of alcohol ad- - - you just never know----all I know is---its doing its job!!!"

Oftentimes when someone here on the BB posts a link - - - and I click on the link - - - it'll turn out the link is blocked. When all of the "Hoop-La" was going around about Gibson's "Passion" movie - - - no matter how I tried - - - I would type in something like "Mel Gibson's Passion of the Christ" and the filter would block the google because of the word "Passion"

    Its worth every dime!!!

Is anyone familiar w/ "covenant eyes?"

    http://covenanteyes.com/

This is a bit different format: it keeps a detailed log of all internet activity, and then e-mails that info to an accountability partner you select.

    Any info would be helpful...thanks!

Thanks to all who posted. I appreciate all the info and am continuing to investigate. I only want to change one more time and the more protection I can get in one integrated program the better it will be for me and my pocketbook.
