I have the opportunity to have an internship with a senior high school student in our town. He is a member of a sister church here in our local association, and feels that God has called him to be a preacher. He has preached for our church on one occassion, and has been preaching around at different churches in our association. And he has asked me to work with him in this internship.

I am going to be in contact with the High School principal tomorrow regarding this opportunity and how it works, etc. It is my understanding now that this will take place every other day during the week from 1pm-3pm. This is my first such opportunity, and was wondering if any of you have had such opportunties and have any words of advice or counsel on how it works, what to include, etc.

I have had college interns for an entire summer a couple times and they have been a real joy.
    1. Depending on the young man, you may need to start by grounding him in doctrine. I did a doctrinal study with each group and in the end made them write their own doctrinal statement.
    2. I taught them how to outline, find illustrations, and then worked with them in refining their own preaching style.
    3. I worked with them in the area of visitation/soulwinning.
    4. We taught them how to teach a SS class
And so much more, but this is a start. My only suggestion is to put a plan together to start with and then refine it as you go. I did not have a plan for the first intern and it was almost a disaster. Make it clear to the young man what you expect in advance also.

I would agree with Pastor J. Get a plan to start with and refine it as you go. When I did an internship it was my pastors first time and it was both good and bad. I think we both learned alot about internships.

ok, let me change this up a bit...I know there are many pastors out there who read this section. I would like to hear from you. If you had an opportunity to have an intern work along side of you in this situation, what things would you plan on to instruct them on?

Internships can be a great blessing. I have had 5-6 over the past 20 years. In each case they were either members of my church attending bible college or they were working in the church as part-time youth or assistant staff.

Pastor J had some good suggestions. I basically looked at my entire ministry and developed materials for each area.. [IMG] ..preaching, administration, SS, weddings, funerals (visited the local funeral home), finances, music, etc. We met weekly for about 2 hours over 12-14 weeks. I gave them a couple of preaching opportunities and I required weekly reports about quiet time, witnessing, personal ministry and family time. Also I made them do a project of some kind. One of them, who is a pastor in Michigan, planned and executed our VBS program that summer. I tried to make it a mix of classroom teaching, practical on-the-job type stuff and just brainstorming various areas. All of them have since thanked me for sharing my ministry with them and enhancing their ministry thereby. It was a blessing to me and to them. I also worked out a deal with the local bible college (Maranatha College, my alum)to give credit for field work. [IMG] Get busy and develop your own teaching materials and have fun! [IMG]

Is this tied to the SBC policy of sending "missionaries" to your own churches? One of the families in the new work were part of an SBC church that got an "intern" - poorly trained and virtually worthless - paid by the SBC cooperative something-or-other.

The young man was supposed to lead the Youth and was just a teen himself. They thought the whole concept pathetic.

Now, I've had young men from Bible college come for the summer and intern. That was fruitful and we've kept in contact for 30 years with some of them.

    Circuitrider,

I would also suggest that you find out what burden they have (counseling, discipleship) and help them to develop that area.

    pcs,

All these men were called to pastoral ministry or missions and so they would be doing both counseling, discipling, etc. The pastoral ministry (especially of the smaller church)is not a specialty, but general practice. G. Campbell Morgan may have been able to spend 30-50 hours per week on a single message and be a specialist, but most pastors today cannot afford such a luxury.

I personally believe that Graduate school may be the place to get your specialized training, but first you must have your general studies (bachelors degree).

    Dr. Bob,

This really has nothing to do with the SBC. It is simple a young man that has surrendered to the ministry that can get some high school credit for an internship with a pastor in town. Basically the school has said that I can work with him on anything that I desire as long as it involves ministry. And I was just interested in getting different pastors opinions on what specifically they would cover and such in an internship.
