h pooh findings that the "war on terror," esp in Iraq, isn't quite working out, n it hasn't endeared the U.S. to the world or made Americans a whole lot safer.

well, the Australians r finding the same thing, too, apparently:

AS DOCTORS warned that Australian soldiers were returning from Iraq so traumatised they had to leave the defence force, new polling has revealed most Australians do not believe the war has reduced the threat of terrorism.
Dr Robert Marr, of the Australian Medical Association for the Prevention of War, said yesterday more than 100 troops returning from Iraq had been given medical discharges, many for psychological trauma.
"We're very concerned that this war is not only damaging Australian soldiers but is increasing the risk of terrorism for all Australians," he said.
Polling by the Lowy Institute for International Policy found that 84 per cent of those interviewed believed the Iraq war had failed to reduce the threat of terrorism and 67 per cent believed it would not help spread democracy in the Middle East.
The institute said 69 per cent believed Australia was too inclined to follow United States foreign policy and 79 per cent believed the US was playing the role of world policeman more than it should.
Yesterday, the doctors' association began a national campaign calling on the Government to pull Australian troops out of Iraq.
Australia has about 1400 military personnel in the Iraq theatre.
Dr Marr said the war could damage the health of all Australians, not only those in Iraq and it was time for doctors to speak out on its consequences.
Last week, a report by major US security agencies said the war had increased the terrorism threat.
Foreign Minister Alexander Downer said the institute structured the poll to get the answers it wanted and most Australians would reject calls for the Americans to surrender to terrorists.
An Australian Defence Force spokeswoman said by March 3, 23 ADF personnel had been discharged on mental health grounds that had been confirmed to be caused by their service in the Middle East or possibly related to it. Another 29 personnel were given mental health discharges that were not related to Middle East service.
In all, 11,090 ADF members had served in the Middle East — 7287 of them in Iraq — between July 16, 2003, and March 31 this year.
