<snip>
    CAIRO, Egypt (AP) -- Reaching out to the Sunni Arab community, Iraqi leaders called for a timetable for the withdrawal of U.S.-led forces and said Iraq's opposition had a "legitimate right" of resistance.

    I know.... I said I wouldn't post in the Politics forum, but with everyone talking about the War all the tim, I thought this would be of interest...

    I think this is a sign of progress that the Iraqis are starting to feel compfortable that the new government can stand up better on its own and that they can secure the nation. I know the Democrats won't like this, but we are winning that "unwinnable" war they keep harping about, and this is yet another sign of it. BTW, this is part of the exit strategy you guys keep harping about.

    I agree, and that is why I believe now is the time we should consider a time-table on ending the "war" per sec and focus on helping them stablize their country.

    Maybe it's American bases in Iraq for a while? Maybe it's more, or less? I don't know, but the politics on BOTH sides are so "cat fightish" that nothing can be done sensable it seems. :(

    I think the best way to calm the terrorism would be for the government to step up and say "get out our our country, Americans". But before they say that, they better have sufficient military and police to keep their nation secure.

    I'm all for a withdrawl- but only if Iraq is equipped and prepared for it. I think this is a sign of the beginning of just that.

    Correct. But, the Democrats, who have a political stake in the failure of Iraq are not the ones who get to set the timetable or even call for one.

    This is (and always has been the Bush exit strategy). Once they are ready to secure their own nation, we will, I am quite sure, happily go home and celebrate a new democracy in the heart of the Middle East that we helped create after destroying the fear society that was under Saddam and liberating them from a tyranical dictator.

    The best way to calm the terrorism is to defeat the terrorists.

    </font>
But you see, there is the twist. You say the Democrats who have a politcal stake in the failure, well I would add that the Repulicans have a political stake in the success or even a hint of success of Iraq.

    Everyone Has Political stakes. That's what makes BOTH sides just as bad.

    WE all wish them success if for no other reason, but because &lt;whether right or wrong&gt; we created this mess, and we should be the ones to clean it up, but again it's Not Dems vers Reps, they BOTH have something to Lose or Gain from this big mess.

    I agree that the Republicans have a political stake in the success of Iraq, and hence, international security. This is why I trust them to make the right calls on foreign policy more than I do the DEMS. It is clear the DEMS want America to lose this war by their rhetoric.

    Actually, it is IRAN who has the ULTIMATE SUCCESSFUL political stake in the future of Iraq:

    ABC News

    Bottom line: It is neither Republican or Democrat, neither here nor there, when it comes to the U.S. foreign policy in Iraq - we lose either way in the big picture.

    I would like to see 12/31/2006 to be our goal to have our troops pretty much out of Iraq based on things going well in the months after the upcoming elections in December.

    Jamie, the difference is that for the Democrats to win their political war, we, as a nation must loose the war on terror, and badly. To pull out now would be to sign a death warrant for probably millions of Iraqi people. That would be a victory for the leftists here, sadly.

    For the conservatives to win, our nation must win the war on terror, which will take many years, and will certainly not allow the removal of anything like ALL troops, in the foreseeable future.

    </font>
Do you care at all about the troops and civilians that are dying in Iraq every day? Do you care about the stability of the Middle East? Do you care about peace in the world? It doesn't sound that way. It sounds like the only thing you care about is winning the next election. I wonder if you'd say the same thing if you or your son were shipping out to Iraq tomorrow. Would YOU die for this cause?

    S&N, the majority of people are now against the war. I am in favor of the war and even I think we need to start pulling out next year. The GOP cannot risk the political upheaval that would take place if by next November we don't have a significant draw down in force. And with the 2008 presidential election basically starting as soon as the 2006 mid-term elections are over, the progress on pulling out will have to continue if the GOP wants to have any chance at winning the White House in 2008 as long as the Democrats put forward a reasonable presidential candidate that can attract a majority of the votes of the centrist independents.

    Therefore, those who wish for a permanent, or even long-term, major U.S. presence in Iraq are going to be greatly disappointed.

    Bush is not going to run this war by the polls because he knows that victory is the only acceptable outcome in this war. We should finish the job and then come home. Not a day sooner and not a second later.

    If the Democrats win the Congress next November the troops will be coming home anyway. The powers that be in the GOP want to win. They won't let George W. Bush stand in their way even if it means weakening his presidency further.

    Bring them on. If any GOP moderate cowards force us to lose another war like in Vietnam, I will do everything I can to destroy them politically.

    It won't be just the moderates, Joseph(whom I imagine are quaking in their boots over your threat [IMG] ). The aim is to get re-elected in 2006. And if that means parting ways with George W. Bush, even conservatives will do it.

    1. I reject your notion that the majority of the nation wishes there to be an immediate withdraw, or even for there to be a premature timetable set. Many are dismayed at how some things are being run and don't like war (I count myself among those numbers). The only people, however, I know who want a premature Vietnam like timetable and cowardly retreat are those who are staking their political careers on the failure of our US military. They are traitors and cowards, and should be politically defeated.

    2. Conservatives do not need to part ways on winning the war on terror to get re-elected. They need to part ways on how the war is conducted to get re-elected and trumpet the importance of staying the course until the job is done to get re-elected. If they don't, they will be exposed for the liberal cowards they really are and should be defeated politically.

    3. It would seem that you have once again changed your position about the president and the war. Does it have anything to do with the Razorbacks within the past two weeks, or have you simply held this position all along, and just waited for the polling data to line up with your real thoughts before you mentioned them?
