There are apparently seven deadly sins (from the following link - http://www.deadlysins.com/sins/index.htm)

And the one I'd like your comment on is about gluttony and the subsequent result of being overweight. So is gluttony a sin, and are you overwieght?

Pride is excessive belief in one's own abilities, that interferes with the individual's recognition of the grace of God. It has been called the sin from which all others arise. Pride is also known as Vanity.
Envy is the desire for others' traits, status, abilities, or situation.
Gluttony is an inordinate desire to consume more than that which one requires.
Lust is an inordinate craving for the pleasures of the body.
Anger is manifested in the individual who spurns love and opts instead for fury. It is also known as Wrath.
Greed is the desire for material wealth or gain, ignoring the realm of the spiritual. It is also called Avarice or Covetousness.
Sloth is the avoidance of physical or spiritual work.

The first three trips up aren't. After that, you're dancing with Satan.

Actually, I usually can't eat more than one trip! Don't ever take me to an all-you-can-eat place. We lose money on that deal!

    That is my feeling too!

However, a buffet is like $7.99 per person, and includes drinks, side dishes, salads and desserts. So even if you go once for each item, you are getting a better deal than let's say going to Denny's for dinner!

I can't leave Denny's for less than $22.00, after my AARP discount. So, while I agree with you in a sense, I did the numbers, and still think your buffet is a good deal even if you stop with one serving of salad, side dishes, entree and dessert, with all the drinks you want! Thanks Ann, I pray all is well with you and your hubby and family! GBU :praying:

    Brother ....

.... I know that you being a man that travels for work, must have the opportunity to visit many buffets. So a few emoticons doesn't seem like a good response! I figure you for a few paragraphs on the subject!

Okay - now on a more serious not

Back in the days when I was single, I would often go to Ponderosa on Sunday - would get there about noon - and I would stay until about 5 pm. I would read the entire Sunday newspaper. Of course the main course was the steak. I would go back several times to the salad bar - taking only enough that I knew I would eat.

Since my funds were limited - this was very economical for me. IMHO - it did not get to the point of gluttony.

Gluttony isn't about being fat. It is about the addiction to food and overeating as ways of life. Some folks can't help but be overweight because of their body type. Now, if food and drink are addictions in your life this is a different issue.

So no, buffets are not sinful. I went to a buffet the other day and sat for several hours whole editing a paper. I ate the whole time. It was great. I left and ran for an extra hour during my workout. My metabolism allows me to eat well and not gain much weight, others aren't so blessed.

I sure hope eating at a buffet isn't a sin. If so, I'm in big trouble since I meet my brother at Golden Corral every Sunday morning for breakfast. I love their battered and deep fried bacon  (and their mini blueberry muffins too).

    :)

And before anyone jumps on me for not being in church on Sunday morning, let me just say that I attend on Sunday evening. :)

You live in a cheap place!! Even our Chinese buffet - the cheapest place around - is $9 each person. We don't have anything like Golden Corral or anything else near me. But when I go to the Chinese place, I don't get much different than when we order take-out - and I get leftovers with take-out! But I seriously don't eat $9 worth of food. I get a water and a small plate of food and maybe a Chinese donut for dessert. When we do take-out for my family, it runs us about $35 ($6 per person) and we always have enough for lunch for most of us the next day.

Oh and all is great with us. Finding some resistance with getting building permits for our new building but what else is new between the government and the church? ;) But we're praising God and hubby is preaching the Word, the kids are doing great and life is good. :) I hope all is well with you too!

Is gluttony a sin AND are you overweight? Yes, umm...I mean no. I mean, yes, gluttony is a sin and, no, I'm not overweight.

As usual, I can't answer your survey.

Let me break it down, one question at a time.

Is eating at a buffet a sin? No.

    Is gluttony a sin? Yes.

    Are you overweight? No.

Might as well pipe in here.

I don't like buffets. Typically the food is bland, and I imagine it to be something that has been previously frozen. So the quality of food is usually marginal.

But the worst thing about buffets is the very real possibility of getting sick. I've had a high "success" rate at getting sick at buffets so I avoid them. If I must go, I bring hand sanitizer with me and use it just before I grab my fork and start eating.

Think about it--multiple strangers handle the large serving spoons used to dole out the food. These serving spoons are under heat lamps, meaning they are kept at temperatures that will keep bacteria and other bugs active and alive. Suppose the person who uses the serving spoon for the salisbury steak before your turn just got done blowing their nose before walking up to the serving line? Or they used the bathroom and didn't wash their hands. Then they handle the warm spoon. Then you grab it. Then you go back to your table and eat stuff with your now contaminated hands.

Another problem areas are the large serving containers with hinged/roller covers. These containers have sterno candles under them to keep the food warm. You have to grab the handle of the cover and rotate it out of the way to get to the spoon and the food. Guess what? They don't change the covers on these things! They bring in new trays of food that they slide into the containers. The covers are touched and handled by EVERYONE that eats from that container of food, plus the spoon inside. Who knows what germs are thriving on them. Classier places have napkins wrapped around the handles of these covers, but most places do not.

Just some food for thought for everyone.
