I have a relative who believes any "misrepresentation" of one's self is a lie, and so that makes it a sin. He believes it is a sin to get your hair highlighted or colored because in essence "it's a lie, not your true hair color." He views make-up, nail polish or fake nails, contact lenses, pierced ears, and plastic surgery to be a sin because he considers them a misrepresentation of the true looks of a person. Is there a biblical basis for this viewpoint? Just wondered about your thoughts on this. I'm not sure how to answer his logic.

The just shall live by faith. We are not under the law but led of the Spirit, that which is not of faith is sin are a few scriptural principles which come to mind.abcgrad94 said:

Is your relative overweight? If so, then a diet is in order because the appearance he is presenting is not what it should be.
Underweight? Same thing about the appearance, but he needs to gain more weight
I don't see what contact lenses have to do with anything.
Wearing glasses is even worse a distortion of one's true looks. If anything contact lenses sould fit right in with his view as being correct.
IMO and FWIW, this is a little overkill concerning the letter of the law.
But, that's just my opinion.

Yeah, he gets haircuts, etc. The deal with contacts is that if you wear them, you're making people believe you have great vision, he thinks. With glasses, it's obvious you don't, so you're not "lying." But, he'll only accept scripture, not my personal opinion about his mowing the yard, painting, etc.

thing is, abcgrad, this might be a time when you just let him live by his own convictions and leave it alone. If he believes this then why convince him to go against his own conscience?

I don't wear contacts to misrepresent. I wear contacts to see. Tell this person there are more important things in life than to get off on these tangents.
