Does God predetermine the winner of sporting events, or is predestination limited to salvation?

    What are your thoughts?

...well, if God knows already who is going to win, then he obviously foreordained it...

But I think the Spurs are going to win not because of any foreordination, but simply because they're the best team in the league this year!

    Scott,

You may be right about the Spurs, but if the Mavs are on fire there ain't no stopping them. The problem is that when they are off, they are really off.

Anyway, what is you defination of Foreordination? Some see it as causing something, others see it as God knowing it and allowing it to happen accordingly.

All things come from God's will. I hope it is His will that my team wins. [IMG]

Now, seriously, the outcome of what we regard as insignificant sporting events affect individual people - whether players, coaches, officials, front office personnel, vendors, fans, etc. These contests and their outcomes determine where people live, whom they come in contact with, etc. And God is sovereign and in control. It is, after all, His creation which He is bringing to His appointed outcome.

Now, go get 'em, Spurs! [IMG]

The much more interesting question is Does God Love Texas?

    And if so. Why? ;)

Actually, it's not. San Antonio and Houston played in Western Conference finals in 1995.

In the Western Conference Finals, you are right. I was thinking NBA Finals with two Texas Teams as the Topic Title suggests.

In 1995 Houston advanced to the NBA finals and won against Orlando the Championship for the 2nd year in a row, having beat New York in 1994. But in 1999 San Antonio Beat New York in the NBA Finals.

Yep. And I have a plaque on my wall to commemorate that great event. [IMG] Of course, two Texas teams can't meet in the NBA finals as all three of them are in the Western Conference. But the odds are that the winner of the San Antonio-Dallas series will win the championship. [IMG]

I agree that outcomes of sporting events etc can have significant affects on people's lives. Do you believe that God caused Dallas to beat the Kings or just that he knew it would happen and allowed it?

I'm trying to get to your defination of foreordaination.

I don't know anything about sports, so I thought I would add this:

When I was called to Alaska, my wife's Grandmother began praying that it would not be God's Will for us to move, along with my Grandparents. Now they have told me (jokingly), their prayers changed God's Will for our lives.

They know how I feel. PUSH

    God is not haphazard.

Will church attendance rise in Texas because of the outcome of two professional basketball series?

    Good question.

    Ephesians 1:11(NASB)
11 also we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to His purpose who works all things after the counsel of His will,

My question - does "all things" mean "all things"?

Based upon your response, I guess your answer is Yes.

"Working all things after the counsel of His will" can be understood in many different ways. None of which would I nor many others that I know of, including Calvinistic scholars, would interpret to mean that God causes man to sin. God doesn't even want us to think that he tempts man to evil yet you want to suggest that he "causes" man to sin?

Heresy!!!   (Even Calvinists should back me up on this one.)

Well, if you are saying that "all things" doesn't mean "all things", then you are on mighty shaky ground when you try to use "all" to support your viewpoint in particular areas. You are just as guilty of interpreting "all" to fit your theological system as anyone else. You have no business criticizing others for saying that "all" doesn't mean "all" in those areas.

It's just like in eschatology where one viewpoint says some things are literal and some things are merely symbolic, while a competing viewpoints says other things are merely symbolic and other things are literal. All sides are guilty of prejudice and bias based on their presuppositions with which they approach the Scriptures. And we are all guilty of doing this.

Do you believe God causes sin or not???

Working something out within the counsel of one will is much different than being the root cause of something. As I stated, even Calvinistic scholars maintain that. You are trying to pathe a new theological path and its leading to a pit of heresy. :(

Truth is heresy to some. Heresy is truth to some.

God does not create sin, but He creates the sinner, the one through whom sin comes while knowing that He is creating one through whom sin comes.
