My husband and I just moved to a new area, and so we are looking for a new church. We found one that we seem to like, exept one little thing..

    its kjv only.

    We are not.

In the past, churches that we have been to that have been KJV only have seemed to have an arrogant and mean spirit about them, and we dont really get that at this particular church.

but, would we even be welcome to join, or is this a deal breaker at most IFB churches?

I'd like to go again. My husband would too, but feels as though we probably would not be welcome there. I wonder if it would be an issue if we used our KJV in church, and then just used our NASB for personal study.

Of course, this could be a "per church" kind of thing, but I figured I would get your opinions.

There are different kinds of KJVOs. You've known the mean ones, this is a nice one.

The only way you can know if you'll be accepted is to ask, but you should probably be careful to ask the right person. For instance, if someone who's been there for twenty years says "Well, the present pastor is pretty strong on it, but most of us take a live-and-let-live attitude toward other versions," that might tell you more than if you asked the pastor--or maybe vice-versa.

And then, what is their real position? Do they believe that God corrected all the Greek and Hebrew texts when he issued the English AV in 1611? Or do they just believe that the best Greek is that there tanksus reseptic (which might mean the NKJV is just as acceptable as the KJV)? You probably won't know until you ask, because there are several shades of belief and emphasis amongst that crowd.

Most Christians other than me have some odd belief or another. I try to hang with 'em as long as I can. Otherwise I'd wind up holding church in my home with just my wife and myself--and she'd probably be under discipline.

We are an IFB KJVO church in as much as all the preaching and teaching is done from the KJV - but we don't have Bible 'checks'.

Most IFB churches who seem to be KJVO are usually KJV preferred. Most do word studies, most try to make the meaning of the text clear and most are willing to accept as a postition of individual liberty anothers use of a different bible. The greatest difficulty would come if at some point you would like to serve in a ministry that involves teaching, at the point you might be at an impasse because they are not going to drop their standard requirements for teaching. Remember you are joining them they are not joining you.

I teach in a seemingly KJVO church, meanings the KJV is all we preach out of. But many is the time we have had interaction in our adult Sunday School and someone has read or quotes from a different version. I never say anything although if the point is being taken from the wording in the KJV I will go back and reread the passage from the KJV so that no sense is lost in the exchange.

Over time you may find that you can use your favorite version in private study and the KJV in your public worship. At our church it would not be a big deal though like Pipe Dude said earlier "it may depend on who you talk to" as to how dogmatic the stand may seem.

Maybe pick up a parallel bible of some sort, with KJV and your preferred, side by side.

Our church is KJVO- we only teach/preach out of a KJV- but that's fine since I'm a KJVP. If I brought in a NASB, I don't think anyone would make a big deal about it unless I took a teaching position and was teaching out of it. Then the pastor would probably take a stand. But using it for myself, I don't think there would be any issues at all.

I am not a KJVO. I helped in a Bible School with a church that was for three years in a row. The first year we offered to help, the pastor's wife (more than the pastor) was adamant that they were KJVO. We tried to accommodate, though we did offer materials that had more than just KJVO in it. NIV! Anyway, the second and third year they did not make issue, though we attempted to respect their call.

I have found this to be the best solution.
It even helps in churches that are not KJVO.

I have one that has the KJV, NIV, NLT, and the NASB.
Chances are when I go to another church and the preacher preaches, it is out of one of these. It makes it easier to read along.

As for the OP question... I don't think anyone here could or should tell you what to do.

Do you think you can serve at this church?
Do you think you will be made to feel like less of a Christian?
Only you can answer these questions.

Ask around ... talk to some of the people, and the pastor.
It is better to be upfront now... it will save hurt feelings.

Who knows, they might surprise you. They may say, "sure, no problem"

To me, what matters most is WHAT THEY TEACH/PREACH, regardless of the BV(s) they use, long as they're preaching from it, free of goofy man-made doctrines. However, if they include the KJVO myth in their preaching or statement of faith, I wouldn't set foot in it because I'd know they're already infected with at least one false doctrine. Luckily we have a large # of Baptist churches in our 'hood, so we have always had a church home here.

Also, I will NOT set foot in a legalistic church that tries to tell us howta dress, wear our hair, etc.

Yes.. Im sure it would be best that we ask around.

The doctrine and preaching seem sound. I have heard 1 wisecrack about other versions, but it didnt really seem terrible the way he said it. .. it was more of a joke in passing about "those dollar store versions."

We shall see. If that is the only thing that we have a problem with than I would be happy to serve the church.

The hardest part is knowing whether or not they will try to make me feel like a lesser Christian. I have been to churches that told me (not personally, but in general the congregation that was full of visitors) to go to the back of the church and throw my bible away and they would get me a "real bible".. I wouldnt be able to take something like that, I dearly hope that this church isnt that way, because so far we like it so much.

I think you are wise in how you are approaching this situation. Be careful, seek the Lord in prayer and pay a lot of attention to what is being taught and said in the classes, worship services, and even in the hallways by members.

I have to agree with the Parallel Bible idea, it has gotten to the point that if you go to a store like Lifeway you can find your favorite translation along side a KJV as well as 2 other.
If you feel that God is leading you to that church and that He can use you to minister through that body, by all means...let Him lead you there. It is hard enough to find a good church sometimes, so some fights are not worth fighting (in my opinion, which i will humbly admit to being wrong pretty often!)

My first thought was "If this is where God wants you, just take your KJV to church and use the other for personal study."

But the Parallel could be your solution.

Lots of good advice has been given.

When we moved a few years ago, our Pastor told us to take time and not rush to join a church. He told us to attend one for at least a month before joining.

To me the answer is found in whether they are rabid KJVO or just KJV perferred. Remember that this is the church that will be teaching your children. If the are of the Ruckman/Cloud group you may want to rethink the kind of damage that could be done to your kids. Just be careful whatever church you go to that they don't add extra doctrines to the Scripture. In the long run it will do more harm than good.

    I did get my answer

We actually went to a different Independed fundamental baptist church tonight that was not KJV, and found out that they were sister churches with the KJV only church that we attended.

They must not be militant if they fellowship with the non-kjv only church. I guess almost half of this non-kjv churches school comes from the kjvonly church.

We will continue to look at this church I think.

    hooray

    Yes, that says a lot.
On the other hand, that's not especially revealing. Even a fairly militant KJVO will send their kids to a generic Christian school. I've seen it plenty of times.
So long as you ask the right questions, you won't go wrong.

I think I will call the churches pastor and ask him, but the Pastor of the non-kjvo church said that they were sister churches and were big supporters of eachother.

He said that even though one was KJV and one was not, they were similar enough in doctrine and practice that they fellowshipped together.
