Is Pink Slime in the Beef at Your Grocery Store?

Yuck! All I can say is yuck. I am glad I gave up buying hamburger years ago.

Pink slime,” a cheap meat filler, is in 70 percent of the ground beef sold at supermarkets and up to 25 percent of each American hamburger patty, by some estimates.

“It kind of looks like play dough,” said Kit Foshee, who was a corporate quality assurance manager at Beef Products Inc., the company that makes pink slime. “It’s pink and frozen, it’s not what the typical person would consider meat.”

I started buying hamburger that was ground right there at the store but there's no guarantee that it's all real beef. I think they said organic is the only way to be full proof. However, I do wonder this, of those people going on TV and complaining about it, how many of them eat hot dogs and chicken nuggets.

If it says USDA Organic there is no pink slime.

Even the fast food chains refuse to use it.

Yet it is served in school meals and it stems from a Republican administration:

GOP responsible for Pink Slime For School Lunch: Government still Buying 7 Million Pounds Of Ammonia-Treated Meat For Meals

7 Million Pounds Of Ammonia-Treated Meat.. yummy..:p

and it all started with a deal ...with a GEORGE H W BUSH appointed friend, undersecretary JoAnn Smith who was president of both the Florida Cattlemen’s Association and the of the National Cattlemen’s Association. Can we say..COLLUSION? And now the REPUBLICANS scream the geovernment is controlling your lives!!

Guess who hired her when she left UDSA ... Beef Products Inc. the largest producer of "pink slime" hired her. What a slimy mess.

You had to know that there would be a way to blame the Republicans for this..

Actually I had no clue of when putting pink slime in hamburger began. It was only after doing more research that I found it began when Bush was in office. Previous to the decision by Joann Smith the stuff was used only in cat and dog food. I do not see it as blaming the Republicans. I was merely giving the historical context, and that happens to have been under a Republican administration.

Read about the stuff. I think it should not be allowed in any food.

Tom, as a pastor I believe you have a responsibility to tell people in your congregation about 'pink slime'. You do not have to tell them when it began. But for their personal health safety they should know and have a choice in whether they continue to eat it or not.

I wonder why Obama and the Democrats don't get any credit for allowing it to continue?

Like everything else, they haven't the brains nuff to do anything about it so they just learned to point fingers like a two year old. HE DID IT, I DIDN'T DO ANYTHING!!!! Kind of like a friends twins, one wet his pants, his mom said "Mike what did you do?" Pointing at his brother, "I didn't do it he did it."

Poor families are helped by this, as it brings the price of food to an affordable level.

But liberals only interest in the poor is telling them what to do. Liberals won't be happy until nobody can afford to eat.

I'm still trying to figure out what is wrong with this type of beef.

It is made from USDA approved lean beef.

What is the problem here?

Are you who holds the belief that government should be kept out of our lives?

Of course it is easily solved. Just stop buying hamburger. There are other, healthier meats available that are no more expensive. If you stir fry they are less expensive.

If people stopped buying pink slime laced hamburger the stores would stop adulterating the hamburger.

What is it to you what anyone eats ? If I eat nothing but pink slime, how is C.T.Boy affected ?

Why does he feel the need to tell us what to eat ? Why does he feel threatened by other people ? Why doesn't he just mind his own business ?

Boy am I glad I can't afford beef anymore.

Ground earthworms I have to believe is healthier than the beef or chicken grown on those giant corporate monopoly "farms" probably tastier too!

What did you expect from a meat monopoly anyways? Quality and safety?

Pink slime is the "stuff" they scrape off the hide, the stuff from intestines, and the stuff left on the floor of the slaughter house once an animal is processed. It is absolutely contaminated with every fecal disease that cows carry -- which is most of them including e. coli -- and it is sanitized by washing it in an amonia solution, then freeze dried to extract the amonia residue, which is itself a deadly poison (why it works to kill all the disease -- we hope). The resulting ooze -- literally pink slime -- is then further processed and added to virtually all store and fast food hamburger products.

You've already eaten a bunh of it whether you know it or not.

I don't know where you get your information but it is FDA approved lean trimmings from which the fat is removed by centrifuge.

I don't eat hamburger so I dont' have a dog in the fight - but at least you should get the facts rather than the wacko left propoganda.

The American economy is resilient.

In spite of Obama's boneheaded moves and anti business policies, investors still have a faith in Americans that socialists like Obama will never understand.

And, another:

Made by grinding together connective tissue and beef scraps normally destined for dog food and rendering, BPI’s Lean Beef Trimmings are then treated with ammonia hydroxide, a process that kills pathogens such as salmonella and E. coli.

The resulting pinkish substance is later blended into traditional ground beef and hamburger patties.

For retired microbiologist Carl Custer, a 35-year veteran of the Food Safety Inspection Service, the idea of mixing in BPI’s Lean Beef Trimmings into more nutritious, pure ground beef was itself problematic.

“We originally called it soylent pink,” Custer told The Daily. “We looked at the product and we objected to it because it used connective tissues instead of muscle. It was simply not nutritionally equivalent [to ground beef]. My main objection was that it was not meat.”
