Hi Jesusfan, this is how some slice the baloney. Eternal security includes "easy believism" where if you walk an aisle, you are saved forever, even if your life does not change and you go out from us. POS includes the idea that the Saints will persevere in their walk, and if they do not, they were never saved in the first place.
Both views can be taken too far and miss the mark. One, only God saves us, so just because you "profess" Christ, does not provide you with any confidence God put you in Christ. So we are to test ourselves, do we love Jesus more than anything, and are we striving to follow Him, and can we see evidence in our own heart of the fruit of the Spirit? If our heart condemns us, we should not think we are saved.
But, on the other hand, if we assume we are "in Christ" then in our heart of hearts, we love Jesus and want to follow him. So our heart convicts us, for we miss the mark, but does not condemn us because we love Jesus. I base this on 1 Peter 1:3-5, which says according to my understanding that God keeps us as in a cell with a locked door, by protecting our faith such that we always love Jesus, even when we have wandered far from his paths of righteousness.
Oasis = Once actually saved, its settled.
