This should be of interest to those who understand just how unprecedented this is. Considering that China has even reached out to France to support them and now we have U.S., French and Russian airstrikes. Nice work ISIS. Have fun taking on every major power in the world.

This piece was of particular interest.

"the Russians do appear to have recently shifted the focus of their airstrikes toward the Islamic State rather than other Syrian rebel groups."

I remember the Lebanese Civil War. The Palestinians were kidnapping foreigners left and right. Then, they kidnapped some Soviet diplomats. The Soviets sent in a Spetsnaz team. I forget if the hostages were recovered alive, but I do know the kidnappers lost their heads.
In this case, ISIS shot down the wrong country's aircraft.

The Russians certainly don't mess about when it comes to situations like that, and the news reports now are saying they are mobilising their nuclear weapons to with on striking distance of the major ISIS strongholds.

The thing is though, Putin, love him or hate him as already said he wants to put his own agenda with the rest of the world on hold, join forces with Europe and the US and create a combined offensive to eradicate IS.

Is that not a good idea?

Oh I'm in favor of Russia joining the fray. Not really enjoying the news about nukes though. Where did you see that?

Seen this coming from the beginning. They've done a fine job of forming an international coalition against themselves. Maybe we won't have to bear the brunt of the cost in lives, or money that we don't have, in Iraq war III as we did with Iraq wars I & II.

The only method to the madness that I can figure is that it is their intent to make this into a holy war, where Christianity is seen as trying to wipe out Islam. I know some of them are foaming at the bit to fight the battle of Falujah with the U.S. all over again.

...yea, this is news to me too. Where'd that come from?

    Dear President Mom-Jeans,

I have not voted for you..a decision which I have not regretted. The actions in Paris call for swift and decisive military strikes resulting in the total destruction of the savages of ISIS.

To ensure this outcome please stay out of Putin's way.

    Thanks a bunch,

    A Patriot

"When thinking about the world’s largest Muslim countries, few people would consider Russia to be among them. Nevertheless, in 2010 the Russian Federation had more than 16 million Muslim residents, making its Muslim population the 13th-largest. Outside the greater Middle East and South and Southeast Asia, only China has a bigger Muslim population; however, because China’s overall population is so large, it represents only 1.8% of the total, compared with 11.7% in Russia. Thus, while Beijing can afford to marginalize its Muslim population, Moscow cannot...."

"MOSCOW — A senior Russian intelligence official on Friday warned of the potential influence of the Islamic State group inside Russia, primarily among the Muslims in the North Caucasus provinces.

Russian federal forces have fought two separatist wars in Chechnya, which has become more stable under the watch of Kremlin-backed strongman Ramzan Kadyrov.

The Islamist insurgency, now largely dormant in Chechnya, has since spread to other North Caucasus provinces where bombings and killings of law enforcement officers have become almost a mundane occurrence.

General Sergei Smirnov, deputy chief of the KGB's main successor agency, the Federal Security Service, was quoted by Russian wires as saying that the group is "beginning to infiltrate" terrorist organizations focused on operating in the North Caucasus. Several warlords of the banned Imarat of Caucasus have pledged allegiance to the ISIS, "a very dangerous trend," according to Smirnov.

An estimated 1,700 Russian nationals have joined the Islamic State group to fight in Syria and Iraq, Smirnov said, adding that the actual figure is likely to be even higher.

Russian President Vladimir Putin's envoy to the North Caucasus said last month that at least five militants who came back after fighting in Syria were killed in security sweeps last year.

In a speech to senior officials of the Federal Security Service, Putin said last month that one of its top priorities should be tracking Russian citizens who have left to fight alongside ISIS."

So do you think Putin is quaking in his boots over these developments?

Politically correct is not in Putin's vocabulary.

No, but I don't feel comfortable with NATO countries running to Putin for help. Obama was wrong when he said that Putin went into Syria not out of strength but out of weakness. He is bombing the living daylights out of ISIS right now.

This could easily escalate into WW3, with the US being dragged along, unlike the Second World War. It's everybody vs. Sunni Islam rather than allies vs. axis but the Cold War continued for decades after the German and Japanese surrendered.

Of course not, but he knows the score. He knew it when he went into Syria:

Islamic State says 'Schweppes bomb' used to bring down Russian plane
    http://www.reuters.com/article/2015/11/18/us-egypt-crash-islamicstate-photo-idUSKCN0T725Q20151118

"Islamic State said it had initially planned to bring down a plane belonging to a country participating in the U.S.-led coalition bombing it in Syria and Iraq, but it changed course after Moscow started its own air strikes campaign in Syria.

"A bomb was smuggled onto the airplane, leading to the deaths of 219 Russians and five other crusaders only a month after Russia’s thoughtless decision," it said."

The downing of the airliner has to have a solidifying effect for Russian support of Putin, just as 9/11 did for Dubya, but I expect there'll be accelerated terrorist acts occurring within Russia now, and no doubt Putin does too. The U.S. doesn't have the Muslim contingent to the extent that Russia and other European countries have to deal with.

This has the potential to get much nastier.

When I think 'WW3', I think nuclear. Is this what you mean?

I don't think it will be nuclear yet, only because ISIS doesn't have nuclear weapons, though some are scared they'll be able to get them from Pakistan soon. If they do, watch out - even if Iran does develop them, they are allied with Russia and I doubt Putin would want to go there.

I wonder how ISIS infiltrated that plane - they picked the wrong country to pick on. Yes, Russia has a bunch of Muslims but most of them are allied with Putin. France is joining in and the US is being dragged in. I really don't know what the correct policy here is, seeing that I think ISIS is anything but contained and now they're going to rage asymmetrical war all over the world, especially in Europe. But then Putin can't be trusted either, since he's shown his old imperialist, expansionist tendencies.

How has Putin shown his old imperialist expansionist tendencies? Please be specific. Give us some examples that weren't provoked by the neocon's and NATO's imperialist expansionist tendencies.
