Recently there was a thread about the teaching of Islam in public schools. According to TruthOrFiction.com, much of what was circulated regarding the subject was a hoax. I'm all in favor of keeping organized religion in check, but it looks like we were duped in regards to some of the info.

So, John, are you saying that Islam was NOT taught in California schools? That is what I am inferring from your post (though that is not reflected in the article you linked).

Some school officials are denying that children in public schools were praying to Allah, but in the same article, parents are complaining their children had to chant prayers to Allah.

And here is a clip regarding the textbook from the publisher's press release:
    http://www.hmco.com/news/release_021202.html

    WHAT A COPOUT!

Propaganda! Can we see "believers" being allowed to "approach" Christianity in a public classroom? Where's the ACLU, I ask?

Why does teaching of Islam from "believers" not violate the so-called separation of church and state, yet Christianity taught from "believers" is viewed as a violation by those on the LEFT?

What an outrage! And what garbage being pablum fed to our children in public schools all under the guise of political correctness!

Prayer rooms were set up during Ramadam in NYC schools for Muslims, too. Where are the Christian prayer rooms? WHERE IS THE ACLU? WHERE's BARRY LYNN?

Will our money one day say "in Allah we trust?"

I'm saying the earlier thread on which this was discussed was based on false information. The fact that you refuse to acknowlege that error is disturbing. Your post here seems to be an attempt to change the subject.

Actually, there's two things going on here:

    1) John, you're incorrect. The earlier posting was based on fact: Islam is being taught. The Truth or Fiction article doesn't deny that in any way. What it expresses is that the level of attention given to this fact has been blown out of proportion.

    2) SheEagle, you need to read that article from Truth or Fiction. According to the interviews with the school officials, Christianity IS discussed in the 6th grade classes--meaning, it's discussed before Islam is.

I don't deny that Islam is taught, just that, for the purpose of this thread, the details we thought were facts turned out to be false.

I don't have a problem with comparative religions and philosophies being taught in cirriculum.

I guess you missed my point. Is Christianity taught by "believers"...that is, are students presented with the gospel and given an invitation to accept salvation? Islam is approached by "believers" in the book, according to that article.

Here's some more....the degree to which Christianity is taught and the degree to which Islam are taught are two VERY DIFFERENT degrees....

From the San Francisco Examiner, hardly pro-Christian publication: (You will note that even Barry Lynn commented on this particular case...)

My daughter has the book "Across the Centuries". I decideded to thumb through it. There's nothing offensive, inappropriate, or misleading about the marerial in it. The book doesn't seem to cover Islam any more than it covers anything else. I think it's a bunch of hype.

She attends a private conserative Christian school, btw.

Read the link on truthorfiction.com please.</font>[/QUOTE]I did. Please be specific. Perhaps you posted the wrong link? I didn't see anything there that backs up your allegation that teaching Islam in California schools is a hoax. Quite the contrary. Did I miss a key point? [IMG]

Doesn't sound "conservative" to me. You have the right idea, Murph. [IMG]

Once again, the ultra findamentalist ilk on this board attempts to tell the rest of us that only their type of Christianity is the only acceptible form, and ther rest of us are "liberals".

No one wants to acknowlege the hoax that was perpretrated on us all. Instead, some feel that we should accept the hoaxed information, since it backs up the ultra-christian agenda.

These folks have not read the textbook in question. I have. I find nothing biblically inappropriate about it. But ultra findamentalists are going to believe what they're going to believe, and make the accusations they're going to make. Now they're deciding, without any knowlege whatsoever, that my daughter's christian school is bad.

That being said, I STILL do enjoy healthy dialogue with those same folks here on the board, and such dialogue should not be discouraged.
