They tried to, but due to the destruction of the temple and the scattering of the Levites, they had to come to accept Reformend Judaism which they acknowledge as not being the same as Mosaic Judasim.

Without the temple and levites there could be no animal sacrifice to atone for sin, hence other rituals were adopted.

 

Paul says the Law of Moses is for Christians:


1 Cor.
9:8
Do I say these things as a mere man? Or does not the law say the same also?


9:9
For it is written in the law of Moses, "You shall not muzzle an ox while it treads out the grain." Is it oxen God is concerned about?


9:10
Or does He say it altogether for our sakes? For our sakes, no doubt, this is written, that he who plows should plow in hope, and he who threshes in hope should be partaker of his hope.

 

I think if you look at the prophets of the Old Testament, and even the narratives in the Torah, it becomes very clear that Israel did not follow the law of God even before Jesus came. Paul discussed this in Romans:
