Ferguson Clerk Fired for Racist Emails: Feels Like I Was ‘Raped’

Former Ferguson City Court Clerk Mary Ann Twitty said Tuesday she was caught unawares when the city fired her for racist emails following a Department of Justice investigation into the city’s law enforcement practices, and believes she was made the scapegoat.

“It took me a while to get over the feeling of being raped and being thrown under the bus,” she told KMOV in her first interview since losing her job. “I feel like I was the sacrificial lamb.”

She added that if everyone who sent racist emails were fired they’d “have to shut the doors.” “It went on all the time.”

Twitty oversaw the collection of fines from court citations, which the DOJ said functioned in Ferguson as a racist collection agency that preyed on the town’s African-American community, though she maintains she had no role in setting the fines. She said there was no effort on the part of the city or the police department to target minorities or reach revenue quotas.

It went on all the time, but not a single white person had an issue with it to the point that they spoke up or brought it to someone's attention?

Now just imagine if you've got police forces all over the country doing this and targeting the people about whom such jokes are made but everyone is doing it so nobody makes a big deal about it.

Ummm.. . if it really went on all the time, Holder etal would have said so.

As it is they could only point to two people.

They could have pointed to as many people as they wanted. As Ms. Twitty said, she was the sacrificial lamb.

I think she probably has a little bit better idea of what WAS taking place than would an outsider.

No, Holder went there with an agenda - to prove that the police department is racist.

If there were more than two employees of the police department sending racist emails his report would have said so.

Unlike Hillary Clinton's emails the Ferguson Police Department emails still exist.

As soon as she stated she felt like she had been raped she was instantly put into the loon category. I am guessing she has never even known someone who has suffered the horrors of being raped to make a such a magnanimously ignorant statement like that. Typical idiot using true tragedy to cover the fact she deserved to be fired. And talk about throwing people under the bus... "Everyone" did it.

/thread! Can't argue with logic. Holder would be waving the systemic flag if it was true.

Justice report finds systematic discrimination against African-Americans in Ferguson

Washington (CNN)A Justice Department civil rights investigation has concluded that the Ferguson Police Department and the city's municipal court engaged in a "pattern and practice" of discrimination against African-Americans, targeting them disproportionately for traffic stops, use of force, and jail sentences.

The probe is the result of an investigation ordered by Attorney General Eric Holder after the police shooting that killed Michael Brown last summer.

Among the findings, reviewed by CNN: from 2012 to 2014, 85% of people subject to vehicle stops by Ferguson police were African-American; 90% of those who received citations were black; and 93% of people arrested were black. This while 67% of the Ferguson population is black.

From the DOJ's report, page 72

We have discovered evidence of racial bias in emails sent by Ferguson officials, all of whom are current employees, almost without exception through their official City of Ferguson email accounts, and apparently sent during work hours. These email exchanges involved several police and court supervisors, including FPD supervisors and commanders. The following emails are illustrative:

A November 2008 email stated that President Barack Obama would not be
President for very long because “what black man holds a steady job for four
years.”

A March 2010 email mocked African Americans through speech and familial
stereotypes, using a story involving child support. One line from the email read: “I be so glad that dis be my last child support payment! Month after month, year after year, all dose payments!”

An April 2011 email depicted President Barack Obama as a chimpanzee.

A May 2011 email stated: “An African-American woman in New Orleans was
admitted into the hospital for a pregnancy termination. Two weeks later she
received a check for $5,000. She phoned the hospital to ask who it was from.
The hospital said, ‘Crimestoppers.’”

A June 2011 email described a man seeking to obtain “welfare” for his dogs
because they are “mixed in color, unemployed, lazy, can’t speak English and have no frigging clue who their Daddies are.”

An October 2011 email included a photo of a bare-chested group of dancing women, apparently in Africa, with the caption, “Michelle Obama’s High School Reunion.”

A December 2011 email included jokes that are based on offensive stereotypes about Muslims.

Our review of documents revealed many additional email communications that exhibited racial or ethnic bias, as well as other forms of bias. Our investigation has not revealed any indication that any officer or court clerk engaged in these communications was ever disciplined. Nor did we see a single instance in which a police or court recipient of such an email asked that the sender refrain from sending such emails, or any indication that these emails were reported as inappropriate. Instead, the emails were usually forwarded along to others.

49

We did find one instance in 2012 in which the City Manager forwarded an email that played upon stereotypes of Latinos, but within minutes of sending it, sent another email to the recipient in which he stated he had not seen the
offensive part of the email and apologized for the “inappropriate and offensive” message.

Police and court staff took no such corrective action, and indeed in many instances expressed amusement at the offensive correspondence.

Hmmm...

That's right in line with the crime rates in Ferguson.

Wonder if Holder addressed the underlying causes of that problem?

The racial discrimination suggests that the crime rates amongst Blacks is what it is because they are being targeted.

Stupid response. Blacks are being targeted to commit crime.

How does that work, exactly? Cops holding guns to their heads and making them rob stores, commit rape and murder?

You have a comprehension problem. That might explain your series of silly questions. You target people more and you'll probably arrest them more.

Now you try it: A+B=C:thumbsup:

Don't try to change the narrative now. Crime rates include more than just robbery, rape and murder.

So see the above response and figure it out for yourself why folks being targeted are naturally gonna make up a larger quantity of those who go into the "they committed a crime " category.

Wait -- did you just say that if we watch a certain group more, we'll see more reasons to arrest them, and therefore those certain people will get arrested more?

I'm assing that what you mean is, if we'd watch all groups equally, we'd see equal arrest rates; and I'm not disagreeing with that.

But I'm getting stuck on the middle part, where we see reasons to arrest them....

How many times have you said that I am overly concerned with an issue? Take your own advice, and stop trying to find a problem everywhere you look! :wavey:

You assumed incorrectly.

Racial targeting is just that . TARGETING. They don't have to have done anything wrong. The officers can come up with something(interfering with a police officer seems to be a favorite) if they so choose.

If you're watching one group and arresting them while ignoring the group who is doing it more and not arresting them for the same thing, please explain how that is just?

But I'm getting stuck on the middle part, where we see reasons to arrest them....

No one would be saying anything about the arrests if the same methods were being applied across the board.. And, like in Ferguson, it's OBVIOUS that Blacks were being targeted while Whites doing the same things were either ignored or just left alone.

And the same thing is happening all over the country.

He's line of reasoning...or lack of it... is confused. It's easy to see why you're gettint stuck in the middle.

He hasn't explained how exactly how that works yet. It's a really stupid statement that needs some clarification.

OK.

Explain how being "targeted" for traffic stops makes blacks commit more crimes.

I can hardly wait.

Pure foolishness.
First, that's not what I said so you should be laughing at your remarkable ability to laugh at things that haven't been said.

They are including traffic stops in the crime rates.

So how does being targeted for traffic stops make Blacks commit more crimes? It doesn't and that's not what I said.

What I did say was:

If you're targeting Blacks and ignoring all the white folks committing the same crimes, then you're darn skippy the crime rates for Blacks is going to be skewed while making it look like the white people aren't doing anything.

It's not rocket science.

If I wanted to make it look like we've got a real problem with Blacks running stop signs, then the only people I would approach about running stop signs are the black suspects. Everyone else, I'd just ignore and wouldn't bother even though they were doing the same thing.
