I, unfortunately, will more than likely have to wait until the film comes to DVD. As much as I would like to see it in the theater I simply lack the funds.

Didn't Tolkien complain that the rest of the series lacked orgization and was incoherent? How will they plan to make a sequel?

Tolkein thought Lewis was sloppy, period. Lewis didn't care; he didn't want to write the tightly wound tales that Tolkein was mastering.

I would think fans of Lewis would view a series much as Jane Austen fans do; folks don't mind that there's no chronology and no continuing characters. Nevertheless, most of Austen's novels have the same set of characters, just with different names.

Or, you could look at the Indiana Jones films; chronology is almost accidental and doesn't really matter. Each film is self contained; it's the characters and the atmosphere that fans liked, not necessarily some fully developed alternative world.

I haven't been to the theater since "Saving Private Ryan" but am sorely tempted to see Narnia ...

"Walt Disney Pictures is so eager for churches to turn out audiences for The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, which opens Friday, that it's offering a free trip to London - and $1,000 cash - to the winner of its big promotional sermon contest."

Christians who join affinity with Disney to promote the Narnia movie are not walking in the Spirit, they are grieving the Spirit. C. S. Lewis was not a Christian and the Narnia stories have nothing to do with sound Bible doctrine.

Shouldest thou help the ungodly, and love them that hate the LORD? therefore is wrath upon thee from before the LORD. (2 Chronicles 19:2)

Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God. (James 4:4)

</font>[/QUOTE]Yes, C. S. Lewis was a Christian. You can read the story of his conversion from agnosticism in his spiritual autobiography, Surprised by Joy. You can also read much of his doctrinal position in Mere Christianity. When I was young I went through Lewis's books and found statements by him endorsing all the fundamentals of the faith.

Having said that, Lewis was certainly not a Fundamentalist, and was on the left wing of evangelicalism. You can see this in his Reflections on the Psalms, in which he doubts the canonicity of the "imprecatory psalms," essentially showing that he did not believe in an inerrant Bible.

JohnV, how can you stay up that late? 2 hours and 12 minutes long, wow, late night.

We're going tonight, for the 7:00 showing.

There are many on this board who do not believe in an inerrant Bible. I am not one of them.

Lewis was not a liberal either - he did believe in the miracles of the Bible and debated the noted liberals of the day. he is actually very hard to peg into a camp other than born again Christian

You're kidding, aren't you? There are 7 books in the series. I believe "Prince Caspian" is already in preproduction.
Right now, I'm working on 5 hours sleep. I will get online later to give my review. In short, I was incredibly impressed, and recommend it with extreme praise.
I'm an unfortunate geek. The last movie I did the midnight showing for was Star Wars, Episode III, and prior to that, Return of the King. I can honestly tell you I'm not as young as I used to be.

How dare you. That's a blatant violation of Matthew 7:1, not to mention other verses. I may not qualify as a puritan, but for you to accuse me of not walking in the Spirit is unrighteous judgement as clear as day, and I invite you to repent of your false judgement against me.
I had the distinct honor of meeting CS Lewis' stepson last week, prior to his return to London for the premiere. I asked him about his stepfather's faith. His EXACT words to me and my wife were: "Jack (Lewis' nickname) had a heart for the Lord Jesus, and he brought me to the Lord as well". So there you have it. I have a first hand account of Lewis' testimony. You have nothing but a desire to judge a person's heart.

Jonnv, I envy you! You got to meet his step son. Cool!

It is true Narnia has nothing to do with sound biblical doctrine, BECAUSE it is not about doctrine. But it does not violate doctrine either. It is a story with intermittent pictures of Christ, for the purpose it serves it serves it well.

Although Jonv is almost always wrong. LOL. Nah, he is not always wrong, just picking on him. He is a real christian and no one should doubt his "walking in the spirit".

Well I am off the board for a day or two, unless the hotel in the big city has internet. We are leaving for the city so we can stay in a nice hotel and go see Narnia a couple of times in a nice theater. Can't wait!

After reading "Mere Christianity" I have to conclude Lewis was a devout Catholic.

well, Christians have to have some entertainment. I am thrilled that these books are becoming movies, and look forward to seeing them.

Actually, Lewis was a member of the Church of England, or the Anglican church. This is the Episcopal church here in the U.S.
