    Question,

I know I'm a minister and should be boldly standing for Christ and the sort. However, sometimes I find it useless to talk with JW's, Mormons, etc. when they come to your house. Today some came to my office (right beside my house). Well they pulled up to the church and came to talk to me. I smiled, they announced they were JW's and wanted to share some literature with me. I said, "No thank you." They asked why and I said, "Because I know what I believe in, Sir." I then told him I was the pastor of this church and thanked him for his kindness and they left.

Should I try to talk to them about their errors? THe reason I even think about it is because I share my faith, but see debating as a waste of my time.

In the past I have talked to mormons, etc. and it seemed like things always went back and forth for hours. Maybe I'm wrong but sometimes I just don't see the use in correcting the missionaries/JW's because they have had years of brainwashing and come knowing what you're going to say to them anyway.

    What do you do?

    In Christ,

    Brooks

I've gone round and round with some too, it's very frustrating. I have no idea if it did any good or not. Like people told me, it could take years of talking with them to see the light. I don't know.

I sometimes talk, but other times I just let it go. Actually, the last time a couple Mormons came to our door, my husband got the idea to just keep them busy....he was at home anyway, why not waste their time? They stood at our door for at least 2 hours! By the time they left it was dark and they had to go home!

Ive never really gotten anywhere with any of them who come to our door, not that Im all that knowledgeable. They usually have a "script" that they pretty much follow, so if you get them off of that, either they start thinking or they get confused and leave......usually the latter.

The funniest thing I had one guy tell me as he was ending the conversation was "Well, you seem to know what you are talking about, so I'm going to leave."

Unless you just want to waste their time, I don't know that there's much use in talking to them at your door. Its different if you have some sort of family or work relationship with them and they are willing to actually listen, I'd guess.

get some lit. to give them. say you will take and read theirs if they will take and read yours. Then it is up to the HS. but I never , never let them go without someting , lit. , lecture, sermon, prayer, something anything. You be surprised how many are not as brain washed as you think. most are mostly misled and misinformed.they are sent in our path for a reason . I don;t think the lost come our way by accident.even if it is just practice for us .we did our part in proclaiming. Then you get those pretty feet [IMG]

I think you should talk to them but try to keep on the topic. When you refute something, show it from the Bible and if they change the subject (as they are taught to do), don't let them do that. Say you want to stick to that one issue (in a nice way). Also, have a time limit maybe unless you feel the HS leading you to talk longer or you are getting somewhere.

You never know what God will use. Some Mormon and JW missionaries have come to Christ because of one thing a Christian has said to them at the door. God can use you even if it seems you are going nowhere. Many times there is an experienced Mormon or JW with an inexperienced partner. Often when I've talked to them, it's been for the inexperienced one even if the other one is clearly rejecting what I'm saying.

I usually stick to the nature of God and salvation totally by grace with Mormons, and the deity of Christ with JW's.

    Afterthought:
Yes, it is tiring and frustrating to do this, but it's because you are engaging the enemy. He is behind these teachings and he would love believers in Christ to get discouraged or tired and not talk to these people.

one of the things i have done is to subtly instill a doubt in the mind of mormons. they will gladly give you a copy of the book of mormon but will not give you a copy of the book of "doctrine and covenant" or "the pearl of great price." When i ask the ones at the door to bring me a copy of each of these to read so we can talk about them, they think they can, but then they find out they are not allowed to. my hope is that they will wonder why and perhaps about why there is secrecy. either way they don't come back with or without the books

Check out this web site. They have excellent materials about reaching the cults.

    Thanks for all the posts.

I think the gentleman that spoke to me was their pastor/minister.

I've talked for hours with people before. I try not to engage in useless debate, but if God tells me to speak I will. It's easier for me to talk to Mormons because I know a lot about their heresy. I have a working knowledge of JW's but don't know them like I do Mormons.

The "doctrine and covenant" or "the pearl of great price" can be found online too. I have a copy of the mormon book that I've read alot of, and talk about ridiculous. LOL It's wild how people can be so deceived.

Joseph Smith also made claims to have held together a church better than Peter, Paul or Jesus! Old Joe was insane.

JWs' up my way spend at least 8 hrs a week learning what we believe. Remember that they are not approaching you so that you can witness to them. They have an agenda and are taught to stick to it.

I have found that after 5 minutes of conversation, if God's spirit is not taking control that I will not waste my time. My witnessing time is precious and the devil would love to see you waste it on a dead end.

Debating with them is probably a waste of time. But it's likely better to try than to do what I did the last time a couple of young Mormons came to my door. As I opened the door one of them began, "Hello sir--" I saw the name tag with the 'C. of J.C. of L.D.S' and I roared "CLEAR OUT O' HERE NOW!!!" and my throat felt like it had been roughly sanded. I have a flaw in speech (I've been told) that my normal tone has an abrasive, sometimes angry, smack to it. So I can imagine how cruel and ugly that must have sounded to a couple of young strangers who think they are there to help me. On the other hand, many of these 'missionaries' admit when pressed in interviews that they don't really like canvassing because of the negative reactions they continually face. I don't know if my outburst compelled them to 'call it the day' one house sooner, but they probably concluded that I don't care about a god in any shape or form, and that is surely not the right impression.

    Untangled,

Sometimes it is very frustrating, but don't give up. As has been said above, when the truth is presented to them, the Holy Spirit will convict them. You cannot allow these folks to sidetrack you. Keep the discussion focused on the deity of Christ.

Most of these cultists are very well trained and indoctrinated into their beliefs.

Never offer them a blessing as they leave. (2 John 1:10) In fact the last time two JHs came to my house, I told them, "I pray the Lord would open your eyes to the truth and I pray no one will be home and that the Lord would hinder you every step of the way."

I only have experience with JW's, and found it very difficult to witness to them. You can make some headway if you get them off their script, but when in trouble, I've had them completely stop talking to me and go on their way.

My wife has a good approach for the JW's who show up on our door. She won't debate them, but takes whatever literature they have in trade for one of our tracts. She figures that it's better if she takes their stuff and dumps it in the garbage than for them to give it to somebody who's lost.

I always make sure I ask for as much of their free handouts I can get at one time. They go right into the trash. I figure the more I get from them to toss, the less they have to give out.

One of the members of a former church used to tell the Mormons and JW's when they came to his door to clear out of the neighborhood or he would follow right behind them and share the True Gospel with his neighbors. And he did do that. I also have done that, I walk right up to the door while they are talking to someone and stand there. When the homeowner asks what I want I'll just tell them I am waiting for the JW or LDS to finish so I can share God's truth with them. Usually the cults wrap up pretty quick and get outta Dodge when I do that, although I have had some pretty good discussions opportunities to talk to both the homeowners and cults.

The biggest QQ that works for me with the cults is this- 'What do you do with SIN?' Have yet to get a straight answer from a JW or LDS and it makes them think.
