    Stein's quote:
is a great summation of what historians should be doing.

It's actually OK for him. He's a liberal democrat, and it's not the content that matters, but the intent.

As Ronald Reagan would say, there he goes again:

    LOL @ that last line.

The aide did the right thing nineteen years too late.

    Hmmm........

Despite this accusation, he negotiated a peace between Israel and Egypt that continues to this day.

Doesn't matter. If he used someone's map in his book without permission, that was wrong.

Of course, he does get credit for brokering the only lasting peace treaty in the Middle East...

On the balance, I like it.

But, but, but, it's not so bad when Jimmy Carter does it!

As if there's any lasting "peace" in the Middle East, Carter has no legacy except kissing up to the PLO since 1976. But he did rip off some fake maps in his latest (heh) book," Palestine: Peace, Not Apartheid." Worst title EVAR, leave it to Jimmuh.

    Who claimed this?

No, you are wrong: he helped negotiate the peace between Israel and Egypt. Thus far, he has been the most successful of the Presidents with respect to peace in the Middle East.

I have not read a book about a modern president. I like the ones about the presidents that are long dead and long gone.

Darn tootin', the best ex- president is a dead ex- president nowadays.

"On the balance" he liked it, but "on the balance", I don't.

Jimmuh Carter gets way too much credit for the Camp David accords, wouldn't have happened without Anwar Sadat.

Someone should throw a hammer at Jimmy Carter, this Palestenian spokesman role of his needs to go.

AND NO MORE PLO PROPOGANA, EVEN PLAGARIZED MAPS!

You're kidding, right? Camp David is in the United States. Both Sadat and Begin came to the United States to work on the peace proposal. Carter invited them to the United States, and brought them to the table.

If you don't like Carter, then that is fine. You are entitled to your opinon. But the simple fact of the matter is that Carter helped to negotiate a peace between Israel and Egypt that lasts to this day. That cannot be disputed. Even if it ended tomorrow (and let's hope it doesn't), it is more than any President has done since his tenure in the White House - more than Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton or George W. Bush.

I certainly hope that you aren't wishing ill well towards a fellow Believer. I read Our Endangered Values, and he makes it clear that he is a Believer...

Ah, the old objectivity ploy. It is simply not possible for a historian to write from an unbiased perspective. The very selection of facts to report is an exercise in judgment. There is no such thing as a history that does not argue some point or another -- some more subtly than others, of course -- but all reportage is selective and therefore slanted.

The apologetic toward the Davidic line in the books of Samuel and Kings comes to mind! But it is true, as one poster has said, that Carter is true believer, and approached statecraft from his understanding of the Bible. From HIS understanding .. his bias!

Egypt never swore to Israel's destruction. Carter chose a fight he would most likely win.

That's ridiculous. Israel has some faults and he is not anti-Semetic for saying so. He is far more harsh towards Palestine.

    I say that's false, Daisy.

Israel can't be so blithe about the murder of its citizens, which is why it built the security fence. Carter calls it an "imprisonment wall," but it has been effective in preventing Palestinian terrorists from blowing people to bits -- the kind of attacks Carter characterizes as "(unfortunate) for the peace process." Twice recently, Israel has vacated occupied land, in Southern Lebanon and Gaza, only to see attacks against it launched from those same territories. But Carter always finds a way to point a finger at Israel.
In doing so, Carter thinks he is providing an extraordinary public service. In an interview with Newsweek, Carter said he wants "to provoke discussion, which is very rarely heard in this country." Carter must not have followed the news during Israel's war with Lebanon this summer, when media outlets were replete with criticisms of the Jewish state. Carter-like calls for a rejuvenated peace process, meanwhile, are so common that they are a cliche.
Carter argues that more people would see the Middle East his way if it weren't for the nefarious influence of the pro-Israel American-Israel Political Action Committee. He apparently believes that if only the Palestinian Authority had better lobbyists, then members of Congress would flock to the cause of this chaotic, corrupt, terrorist-supporting excuse for a governmental entity.
Incredibly, given his media presence, Carter thinks that he is being silenced by shadowy forces. He makes this bizarre claim: "My most troubling experience has been the rejection of my offers to speak, for free, about the book on university campuses with high Jewish enrollment." Does Carter keep track of which schools have lots of Jews? And who does he think is keeping him from speaking at them?
Just as creepy is a passage in the book about Christians in Galilee who "complained to us that their holy sites and culture were not being respected by Israeli authorities -- the same complaint heard by Jesus and his disciples almost 2,000 years earlier." As New Yorker writer Jeffrey Goldberg notes, "There are, of course, no references to 'Israeli authorities' in the Christian Bible. Only a man who sees Israel as a lineal descendent of the Pharisees could write such a sentence."
What the Palestinians desperately need is a decent government that is genuinely committed to pursuing peace with Israel. By excusing the current degraded state of the Palestinian leadership, Carter is helping only to extend the conflict with Israel and perpetuate Palestinian suffering, not to mention trash his own reputation.

Daisy, don't you know that you can't say anything here that is anti-Israel, even if it is true!
