Baptists and Evangelicals are always accusing Catholics of believing in a works-based salvation. They cite as evidence the Catholic view that if one dies in a state of unrepented mortal sin, he goes to hell. This belief, Baptists and Evangelicals say, doesn't give sufficient weight to the saving power of faith in Christ.

Suppose a "saved" person commits adultery (and please don't tell us that's not possible). Must that person ask God for forgiveness? If he refuses to do so, what are the consequences, if any?

Prediction: we are going to see some circular arguments in response to this (e.g., "well, if he doesn't ask for forgiveness, that means he was never really saved to begin with . . .").

And before you answer let's review yours and my favorite:

Being born again he was impervious to Sin
For 30 years brought people to Jesus.
30 years later in 1988 he gets caught with a Whore.
He SINNED!

bmerr here. 1 Cor 6:9-11 gives a list of some which will not inherit the kingdom of God. Adulterers are on the list. You are correct, one who has been born again, of water and of the Spirit, can commit adultery. It is the commission of adultery that makes one an adulterer, which puts one on the list of those who will not inherit the kingdom of God. If such a one were to continue in this sin, and refuse to repent, he would be lost.

Well first of all only God knows whether or not anyone of us is saved or not.

Second of all man's works NEVER enter the picture of eternal salvation. They can not or the works of Christ would be deemed insufficient, which is sad that one would even think they need to put something on top of what Christ has already done.

That is about the height of human arrogance! But I regress.

Bmerr had a great passage, unfortunately he missed the Truth of the passage.

The key to this passage is inherit the kingdom of God. Eternal salvation is not an inheritance. It is a gift. The very moment someone believes in the substitutionary death and shed blood of Jesus Christ as payment for their sin they are forever saved. It's a done deal. The subject of eternal salvation will never come up again in that person's life or death. It's over with.

Inheriting the kingdom of God is something that will not take place until after the judgment seat of Christ.

So in bmerr's view he nor anyone else can no whether or not they are saved until they take their last breath and then open up their eyes in heaven or hell. What a sad way to go through life.

As to Jimmy Swaggart, I don't know if he is saved and neither does anyone else. If they say they know then they are liars. Jimmy says he's saved, so I believe him.

Based on what Jimmy says was he unsaved until he repented of his adultery? No. He was just as much saved then as he was after he repented.

I know a lot of people don't like to hear that, but it's the Bible Truth on the matter.

No one knows if anyone is saved or not, has been saved or not, or if they will never will be saved or not.

I've always been highly suspicious of TV preachers, but I'm unable to see into his heart (and probably wouldn't want to). Only God knows for sure.

One thing this thread shows is so many have said a Christian could commit such acts but looks like his followers don't feel that way for they didn't come back. His group is very small now. I suspect all those who say a Christian can commit adultery and then get forgiveness and never leave the church don't really believe that when it comes home to roost.

I couldn't vote because the poll was so biased. There needs to be a 4th choice without condemning OSAS. I believe he was saved. I don't believe in OSAS, but I don't think the mistaken OSAS belief is of Satan.

When we get to heaven, we may find out that none of us were exactly right in this OSAS area.

I know OSAS is false doctrine - but I don't know if Swaggert was ever saved.
