What do you think of Joel Osteen? I used to like him. Then I listened to what he was doing. I waited about 15 minutes before I heard a scripture. It's crazy. How are people going to realize that they are sinners that need to be saved? I would, personally, be ok with it if it was just a tv program or he did what he does just every once in a while. There is a definite place for it. The problem I have is the people that attand his church. It becomes a problem when that is ALL you get.

They won't, unless the Holy Spirit reveals it to them. If He is lifted up, He will draw all men unto Himself. I pray that Joel will one day realize the vast platform he has, and use it for the Lord and not just himself.

Didn't Joel inherit his congregation from his father and isn't he a Word Faith heretic or have I got names mixed up?

    yes and yes
His dad used to be United Pentecostal but changed his tune to get more members. At least that is what my daughter's preacher said who was a friend of his at the time. Her Pastor said the father sold out for more people. Me I believe in the Trinity and always have.

I try to not think of him.

He is a feel good, warm and fuzzy motivational speaker. He makes people feel good with his communication skills

He is NOT a preacher of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Joel's mother, Dodie Osteen, said on TV that Joel didn't like to tell people they are sinners. Gee, a preacher who preaches he gospel has to preach the law at some point. People can't be saved until they know they're lost. Joel does neither.

    He is a motivational speaker.

He does have WofF written all over his messages IMHO. My husband got one of his books for Christmas. I just started flipping through and was amazed at how little it said except think good, feel good, expect good things to happen. I wonder if he's read Job.

For the first year in Houston I attended Lakewood Church. I was a fairly new Christian at the time and did know if what he was teaching was bad or not. Now I know better and I agree with the above statement 100%. He gives a sermon on motivation and then at the end he gives the call to the gospel. They don't really tie well together. A know a lot of people who will not attend church on sunday but will watch him on tv. Most people just want someone to make them feel better, he brings that for them.

    GB,

Your right. Years and years ago way back when Joel's daddy was first called into the ministry he was a southern baptist.
I heard that on a tv documentary that I believe was put out by Lakewood Church itself.

I listened to Joel Olsteen "preach" a sermon one night on marriage and how to make it better.

He never used any scripture. He never mentioned ANYTHING about a husband loving his wife in a sacrifical manner or a wife respecting her husband in a sacrifical manner.

Here's what he did say in the 35 minutes that he talked specifically to wives:

    </font>
    • He said that wives were too "fat" and out of shape. He said that women "let themselves go" after marriage and that their marriages would be better if they would get into shape.</font>
    • He said that when a husband comes home from work, that a wife should be "dressed up" with make-up and the whole nine yards.</font>
    • He said that wives don't understand how much their husbands need sex and that wives do not respond meet their husbands' sexual needs in the area of "quantity". He said, "You know ladies, if your husband doesn't get it from you, he WILL get it somewhere." </font>
    • He said that wives need to stop wearing old grannie nightgowns to bed. He said that husbands despise being in bed with a wife that wears the same old nightgown night after night and that the secret to his marriage was "Victoria's Secret" lingerie. (And yes, I know that his wife's name is Victoria.)</font>
The sad thing was that the entire congregation was howling hysterically as if they were watching Comedy Central.

The pathetic thing was that he made countless wives who do not look like HIS wife feel even more insecure than they do.

And the profoundly disgusting thing was that he, as a "preacher" behind the pulpit of a church, basically gave husbands spiritual permission to seek sex somewhere else if they didn't like what they were getting at home.

Oh, yes. He did talk to the husbands for about 10 minutes.

    He told them the following.

    </font>
    • Communicate better.</font>
    • Don't pressure her for sex all of the time.</font>
The whole thing made me physically ill. I have wanted to write a letter to him so many times and tell him that he did NOTHING to improve the sanctity of marriage.

He created gross physical and sexual stereotypes of husbands and wives. He never spoke of love at all. He was just trying to get laughs and he did so at the expense of the self-respect and self-worth of wives and at the expense of the dignity of husbands.

The "sermon" was at best a juvenile monologue better suited for Saturday Night Live and it was at worst a mockery of the beauty and joy of holy marriage.

What Joel Osteen is, is a motivational speaker! He shouldn't be pastoring a church! He should just travel around the country and speak at hotels charging outrageous fees for people who need to feel good about themselves.

Any preacher that won't call people sinners isn't a man of God!

There was a good write up of Osteen in Texas Monthly a few months back. His daddy was an SBC in the beginning.

Joel started out running the TV ministry for his daddy, and everyone was suprised when he was basically hand picked by his mother to succeed his father.

I agree that Joel is little more than a motivational speaker that has heard enough of God's word to throw in a few verses here and there. I too pray that that the Spirit convicts him and uses the huge platform that he has to bring people to Christ and repentance.

The problem with Osteen is more than that he is a motivational speaker. He holds to some WF doctrines, such as Jesus having to go to hell to fight Satan (I heard this in his Easter message), and that your thoughts affect reality (i.e., you can make someone die with your thoughts - I heard this with my own ears in one of his messages). In fact, a lot of what he says is very New Thought (mind science).

He can't give the true gospel with doctrines like these messing up his theology.

There are some great blogs out there about Joel. I did a google on Joel Osteen History.

Very few put him in a grand light.

During the few times I've seen him on TV, the most annoying things about him are his plastered-on smile, and that he blinks his eyes like twenty times a minute.

I wasn't aware of it being a "New Thought" (mind science) thing...when the Old Testament speaks about the tongue.

Pro 18:21 Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.

Pro 21:23 Whoso keepeth his mouth and his tongue keepeth his soul from troubles.

Isa 3:8 For Jerusalem is ruined, and Judah is fallen: because their tongue and their doings are against the LORD, to provoke the eyes of his glory.

James 3:6 And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell.

1Peter 3:10 For he that will love life, and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips that they speak no guile:

I have always heard watch what you say. The bible warns us about the tongue. I don't know if its a new thought, but its a teaching that has been put under the table and hid for too long.
