John 3.36 NIV Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God’s wrath remains on him.”

John 3:36 NASB “He who believes in the Son has eternal life; but he who does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.”

John 3.36 NRSV Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever disobeys the Son will not see life, but must endure God’s wrath.

John 3:36 KJV He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.

Q: Is it "believing not", "rejecting the Son" or is it "disobeying" that brings judgement?

IMO, if you disobey or believe not, one is actually rejecting the Son. So I’m going with ‘rejecting the Son’ will bring the wrath of God.

    Disobeying
Jesus said, If you love me, keep my commandments.(John 14:15)

    Eph 5:6 -
Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience.

I guess I'm wondering if the NIV is showing some bias here...'rejects' the Son is not the same as "does not obey." The latter might suggest that 'works' ARE important!

I trust both the NASB and the NRSV for literal translation from the Greek over the NIV and the KJV.

So, as such, I would probably vote for "obey" being the most literal word-for-word meaning...

However, the NIV's use of "reject" is in the spirit of the NIV. To translate MEANING rather than word-for-word.... by not obeying, you are rejecting....

I'd say the least accurate is the KJV.
