The best-selling non-fiction book in the US in "John Adams" by pulitzer prize winning writer David McCullough. If you like history at all, this is a page-turner. I read it all, 650 pages, in 4 days. All those old American patriots whom you see on dollar bills come alive. They have personalities and flaws and they often disagreed with one another vehemently. Adams, best known as the second president of the US, also served as an editor of the Declaration of Independence, author of the Massachusetts state constitution which became the model for the US constitution, ambassador to France, Britain, and Holland, as well as VP to Washington. McCullough describes Adams as a devout Christian. Late in life he evaluated the French revolution and contrasted it with America's, saying

"If the empire of superstition and hypocrisy should be overthrown, happy indeed will it be for the world; but if all religion and all morality should be over-thrown with it, what advantage will be gained? The doctrine of human equality is founded entirely in the Christian doctrine that we are all children of the same Father, all accountable to Him for our conduct to one another, all equally bound to respect each other's self love."

Late in life both he and his wife Abigail supposedly embraced universalism, at least in name anyway. Peter Marshall and David Manuel outline several of his letters with his son, John Quincy in "From Sea to Shining Sea". But I suspect that both Diesm and what passed for universalism at the time would be more recognizable as non-denominational Christianity today. He was one of the co-founders of the American Bible Society.

Those of us who are familiar with the stage musical "1776" can only picture him as "obnoxious and disliked". O' that there were more like him today. Men who are willing to stand for what they believed, and count the cost later.
