What he teaches is that the actually blood of Jesus in and of itself doesn't do anything for a person. What is necessary for salvation is faith in the fact that His life was given as a substitute for our sin.

Also, he teaches that the Messiah had to die. That is what "shedding of blood" means, according to JMac.

I like JMac, too. He is completely solid on so many things.

Are you saying that He didn't have to?

 

Timothy, I could have been more clear I guess. I was just saying that MacArthur believes that the "shedding of blood" simply refers to His death.

 

To be precise, I think MacArthur believes that "shedding blood" is a reference to his violent sacrificial death.

This is an old straw man that was brought up years ago and made popular by the Sword of the Lord. It has been answered numerous times in print and in voice. I have MacArthur's letters and things in my files where he explains what he said. MacArthur's position is the biblical one. There is no saving power in the fluid itself. The salvation was in the violent, sacrificial, substitutionary death that he died.

Here is the statement from The Master's College doctrinal statement:
"We teach that our Lord Jesus Christ accomplished our redemption through the shedding of His blood and sacrificial death on the cross and that His death was voluntary, vicarious, substitutionary, propitiatory, and redemptive."

 

We are very thankful for the ministry of John MacArthur. Altho' we don't agree 100% with everything he says [he is Dispensational and we are New Covenant in theology], the vast majority of what he teaches is "right on." His clear, concise Biblical teaching helped us sort through the "garbage" we'd imbibed as Charismatics, and helped establish our feet on the solid rock of Christ.
He too is "under construction" as are we all, and has made some slight alterations to his understanding in the past 10 years.
At any rate, we highly recommend this brother's teaching--by radio, book, or otherwise--and praise God for his faithful love for Christ & His Word.
